to buy alcohol.

.
.
What do you think about this? Debate over lowering the drinking age is heating up in several states, fueled in part by legislators who contend that men and women who are old
enough to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan are responsible enough to buy alcohol
legally. Legislation introduced in Kentucky, Wisconsin and South Carolina
would lower the drinking age for military personnel only. A planned ballot
initiative in Missouri would apply to everyone 18 and older. An
initiative in the works in South Dakota would allow all 19- and 20-year-olds to buy
low-alcohol beer. Vermont's legislature is considering a task force to
study the issue. A Minnesota bill would allow anyone 18 and older to buy
alcohol in bars or restaurants, but not in liquor stores until they're 21.

I can see allowing military personnel to be able to purchase it, but then again, last I knew you could drink ON base at 18. (I don't know if this is still the case though.) I don't believe we need a bunch more 18 or 19 year olds running around driving drunk though. kwim?

I dont think this is the best idea they have had. I know people argue that if you can die for your country you should be able to buy beer and so on, BUT 18 y/o go to school with 14 y/o so what about the 18 y/o HS kids that buys your 14 y/o alcohol.

I went to a small HS less than 3000 i am sure...And we partied a lot. Becuase we had older friends or friends with fake id's. Now that I am a mom, it makes me worry about them lowering it. Do they realize the implications of the change?

I really think it's the whole "if you can die for your country at 18" thing going on. Heck, I remember the day my sister turned 19, because back then that was the legal drinking age here in Arizona. We had a GREAT party.
I do think 18 is too young, ESPECIALLY for a kid in high school. (My friends either had parents, older siblings or went shoulder tapping when I was in HS though.) However, when I was in college is when I learned that with my military ID I could go on base and drink there. (Don't know if I could buy in the store there, we just went to the NCO club and let the guys buy us drinks. lol)

So, while I think it could be a bad idea- kids that want to party will get it anyway. It's why I'm torn on the idea.

I think it's a really bad idea. Let's face it, the majority of 18 year olds are not terribly responsible or mature enough to make life and/or financial decisions without throwing alcohol into the mix.

As it is, 18-20 year olds in the military can legally drink on a military base (beer only), or at least that's how it was when I used to party on the base back in the stone age.

Yeah, but we also trust all these 18 year olds to vote. That scares me just as much. (Would scare me more if they actually got out and voted. lol)
