Atheist/Agnostic Parenting

The area I live in (the south) is predominately baptist.  I have never seen so many brainwashed people in my life. 

At work a few people talked about tithing.  Apparently there was a "tithing celebration" a few weeks ago at the local churches.  This is where they try to take your money.  Celebration my a**!  One person said that her minister said that if it comes between tithing or buying food for your family, then you should probably buy the food.  I was like PROBABLY???  Are you kidding me?  During this conversation the religious ones didn't get it!  One is in a severe amount of debt and doesn't see that the money he gives to the church could be used to dig himself out of debt.  He and his wife are giving the church around $500 a month!  It makes me sick.

That makes no sense to me.  Churches and religion try to claim they are there to help people, but when you demand they give you money or burn for eternity, that's not helping.

Similarly, my wonderful grandmother, who watched every single penny every day of her life as she raised SIX kids with a nearly-absent husband, tithed her 10% or more regularly, while feeding herself inferior quality food because she couldn't afford any better.

My hope would have been, near the end there, that the church would have given it back to her with a little ribbon around it with a note saying, "You have given enough! Now let us give to you a little". I am, I admit, a bit bitter that no one from her church thought to do that...

HOWEVER, she would have never allowed that and she tithed in private. She was a wonderful and loving woman and there is no way she would have considered NOT giving money to her church, so it was her choice. Peace, Karen
