Can I teach a 9 month old to self sooth?

My other kids could self-sooth at this age (one had a pacifier and one is a thumb sucker with a blankie) but my 9-month old has me. He can't (and has no interest in) putting himself back to sleep or calming himself at all. Up to a few weeks ago, it was fine but he nurses constantly at night and when we're both asleep his latch is off and I'm hurting.

I tried to night wean him, but his night waking got worse. I don't think I can night wean without teaching him some skills to replace the nursing at night. He doesn't want a lovey and he just cried in my arms for an hour while I rocked him, until I gave in and just nursed him to sleep.

Any ideas (that won't include CIO, of course)?

I don't have an answer for you, but wanted to offer hugs. Perhaps he's not ready to night wean? Or if you really need him to, then you'll have to rock him for a while. Good luck!!

I don't really need him to night wean. I just need him to unlatch and roll over and maybe not nurse so much at night. :) Last night was better, he seems to be nursing less during the night and, at least, I'm not sore anymore.

I sympathize. Dominic liked his pacifier but even then night nursed until he was 13 months. Samantha always hated the pacifier and didn't nightwean until she was over 2. You could try slipping the pacifier in while he's still half asleep rooting around. That used to work sometimes for Dominic.

Hang in there!
