I love going to the library for books on everything related to autism. I just hate having to give them back! I always think to myself "well, that doesn't apply now but it might later on..."

Books are expensive, though. I don't think I could afford to buy everything, even if I wanted to.

So my question to you is- do you like to borrow books from the library or do you prefer to just buy them?

Which books do you buy?

Which ones do you borrow?

Any alternatives?

TIA!

Mostly I use the public library. If I find a book that is really worthwhile and it will be helpful, like self-help, or like you mentioned about autism, then I'll buy it. I like the library b/c it gives me a 'free" preview and if I hate the book, all I do it drop in the slot at no cost to me (well, except my tax dollars), which is all the more why we should all be using our public libraries!!!!

And I read lots of novels too in the bubble bath after my son has gone to bed- those I check out from the library UNLESS the library doesn't have copy, which is rare and then I order it from Amazon if I just HAVE to have it.

That's a great point!

Our library has very little about Autism...it's kind of sad. I sometimes go to the book store if I ever have a free hour (kind of rare these days) and I might sit there and read a bit. Mostly, however, I buy on Amazon. Most books can be found used and they often times cost around $5.00, plus S&H (which is also about that much). Truth is that I get most of my valuable info online.

I discovered after several years of living here that our library does intra-county library loans (within the same county), inter-county loans (between any other county in our state), as well as inter-state library loans.

I've used the intra-county and inter-county book loans a LOT since I found out about them. I can request the books online as well as get notified online of their arrival, so it's very simple. I haven't yet figured out how to do the inter-state library loans, but I haven't really had occasion to need to look further than in-state.

Admittedly I live in a well-populated area, so we might have more available to us than in a more rural area. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask your librarian. I found out on a fluke by an older volunteer at the library who was shelving books and was so excited after learning about inter-state loans that she was telling everyone she met in the library. Otherwise, I still wouldn't know!

To address the original question, I've read a lot of library books but only purchased a few that I really wanted to keep for future reference.
