I'm SO SICK of Dr.'s not thinking out of the box when it comes to our children. Both of my boys are sick. Strep is going around their preschool and they've had a confirmed case of the flu. Brett came down sick first. 104 temp. They are nonverbal so they can't tell me what's bothering them. Took him to the pedi. Rapid strep negative. They didn't see the need in doing a culture. Diagnosed him with a cold and sent us on our way. Next day, he's still sick and his twin brother gets ill as well. 102-104 degree fever. Fast forward a day (yesterday-Saturday) and the second one won't drink, looks like crap, and starts getting a rash. Last evening they just looked so sick, we took them to Urgent care. Both have ear infections-the second child in both ears, the first, in one. I questioned the Dr. about strep because of my sons rash and the fact that he had a strawberry tongue, and he said he was treating them with antibiotics regardless, so no point in testing them for strep. I insisted on a shot because it's so hard to get oral medications into them. He did that but then proceeded to give me the nastiest tasting medicine to continue them on 3 times a day for 10 days!! DUHHHHH!!! Did you not hear me say it's hard to get oral medication into them??? So please give me something gross and make me give it to them THREE times a day. I called back and asked if we couldn't just try amoxicillin since it works well with Strep (and has always worked well with my boys in the past-they only take antibiotics once, maybe twice a year). But, it's something I know they'll take willingly. They said the other stuff was stronger. I explained it doesn't matter how strong it is if they're spitting half of it out or throwing it up (which they did). Has the medical community lost all common sense? It would more effective to even take them up there for daily shot if need be. It's not fun, but it's even less fun holding them down and making them puke from medicine. Grrrrr!

So sorry to hear the boys are both sick!!! That is no fun! And I completely understand about the medicine that tastes yucky. The only medicine I can get my son to take willingly now is Tylenol Cold, and it absolutely must be grape flavored. It took years for him to willingly take it... and of course I now know tylenol is not supposed to be good for our kids, but he absolutely refuses to take ibuprofen and I can't blame him because it has such an awful taste in comparison. I am so VERY LUCKY that he is rarely sick enough to need antibiotics. He has only had them two or three times in his almost nine years.... including last year when he had a 104 degree fever that would go down to 102 after taking a full dose of tylenol. But the doctor gave him an RX for amoxicillin for a "possible" ear infection... It took SO MUCH bribing, begging, and pleading for on my part (for about 45 minutes each time), to get him to take a full dose.

I hope the doctor agreed to change the RX to amoxicillin! If not, call them every day to let them know the boys still won't take it!

I hope they feel better very soon!!!

They did change it, begrudgingly. It's SO much easier to give it to them. If it doesn't get rid of the infection, we'll have to come up with a new plan, but it's worth a try. I would rather take them in everyday and hold them down for a shot than sit here and toture them three times a day trying to get nasty medicine in them. They are getting pretty strong, so most times the medicine just flies all over the place anyways. With the Amoxicillin, they just sit there nice and let me squirt it in their mouths. I think dr's who don't know them well just think they're being bratty three year olds, but what they don't realize is that they have horrible oral sensory issues. That's not the same as being a brat! I also think that this particular dr. thought I was just being a hard-to-get-along-with b***** mom!
