I got this list from Super Baby Food. The author likes homemade baby food, but sometimes suggests store bought too. I thought it would be a good idea for some moms who want to add some flavor to plain yogurt. As usual, make sure your LO is old enough to have the certain mix in.

~fresh fruit- apples, berries, peaches, pears, etc., chopped or pureed
~frozen no sugar added fruits, chopped or pureed
~natural jam or jelly
~jarred commercial baby fruit
~applesauce
~rehydrated dried fruit, chopped or pureed (add a few hours before serving so fruit has plenty of time to soften)
~crushed pineapple
~blackstrap molasses
~maple syrup
~honey (after one yr old)
~molasses
~vanilla (not imitation, make sure the label says pure)
~wheat germ
~lemon or lime juice (for older LOs)
~frozen juice concentrate
~apple, prune, or other type of fruit butter
~well ground nuts or seeds (for older LOs)
~thinned creamy peanut butter
~thinned almond or any nut butter
~thinned tahini or any seed butter
~pureed cooked carrots or sweet potato
~finely diced cucumber pieces
~finely chopped parsley
~cinnamon
~nutmeg

What a great list of ideas!! I usually use fruit purees that I have made, because it's so much cheaper than buying baby yogurt from the store. This has given me some new ideas!

Kirsten,

Should I use whole milk plain yogurt?I have been wanting to give Elizabeth yogurt cause she really likes the Gerber one with bananas but all the kids yogurts I see on the supermarket seem to have so much sugar. By the way, she is 9 months.

Thanks.

Ivonne

There is a ton of sugar in the ready to eat yogurts. Even the Stonyfield baby ones! You should be able to find the larger containers of whole milk plain yogurt. You want it to be whole milk since they need the fat at this age. Second best would be low fat. If you buy the large container of it you can scoop a little into a bowl and add your own mix ins.

LOL because at around the 9 month mark, we ADDED yogurt to everything. Yogurt can be a yummy savory addition to meats and makes it easier for babies to eat. I even won a baby food recipe contest for yogurt mango chicken. :D Now Heidi basically refuses to eat yogurt, I will have to try it again soon. She is into smoothies that aren't so sweet. I made the mistake of buying vanilla yogurt and it is gaggingly sweet and she refuses to eat it. Thanks for the list, the tahini would be interesting!!
