I'm due the 21st, and we're set on a name for our son, but still working on what to call him.
DH is Peter Sidney C., Jr, and DFIL is Peter Sidney C.
DH is known to family and friends as Pete, but has recently been Peter more professionally. As a child he was PC for many years, mostly before I met him. DFIL is pretty much exclusively Peter.
Some more info on our choices, plus some others not appearing on this list:
Peter/Pete
Kind of the default, but quite confusing.
Peter Sidney
Logical, but long. I do sometimes call my daughter Hannah Jane, but not all the time. I like it, but unless we worked harder on it than we're likely to, he's likely to end up just being Peter anyway.
Pete Sid
This is growing on me--but it's not a usual naming style in our region (New England). Is it too weird?
Sidney
We like it... but Sidney is now almost entirely a boys' name. I would consider it for a girl before a boy, really. It's a good middle name, but not what I want my son called every day.
Third Peter
Another fun biblical reference, but again, too clunky for everyday use. I don't mind Third, but I doubt it will catch on outside family. To some extent that's okay, but I don't know if it's really what we're looking for.
Pi
With Hannah, the boys' name we had planned was Peter Immanuel, in part so we could call her Pi. I love the nickname Pi. Who did not want the name PSCIII is a matter of debate or miscommunication, as we now both claim it was the other that didn't want that. But we still like Pi... I just can't seem to use it. I'm pretty much only calling him Peter most of the time. But maybe that will change once we see him.
PC
My husband's childhood nickname, which served him well for many years. He is a computer geek, so it suited him well. Not sure how DH really feels about this--at one point he said "But that was my name." He's also asked "What's wrong with Pete?" so I don't quite know what he's thinking. Along these lines we've also thought of PS3, P3, and PS, but PC is the most appealing of these. His parents like it too for nostalgia reasons. Threepio has also come up, but it just feels like we'd need a justification for the o.
Peace
Occurred to me recently--both of us unsure. I like it in abstract. Actually calling my little boy Peace on a regular basis? Probably not. (Plus he sure seems active so far!)
Simon
Peter called Simon appeals to us both. It's a fun Bible reference and we like the name Simon. It's not like just picking a completely unrelated name (which honestly, I've considered).
Cooper
Our last name, which I kind of resent being widely used as a first name by people who have no connection to it. Not sure I like it as a first name. DH seemed to think it was kind of weird, though that may have been more the fact that calling him Cooper was less ambiguous than calling him Peter despite there being more Coopers than Peters.
Trey
Does not appeal to us at all.
Tripp
Has the advantage of being a Star Trek name, but no appeal beyond that.
Threepete
Too cliche. Not our style of pun.
Pedro
Not really taking this seriously, and though we feel more connection here than with any other variants from other cultures (we've spent time in Costa Rica), it's not what we're looking for, really.
Rock
I could see it... don't know if I could do it. Or Stone. But definitely not Rocky.
Terry
Neither of us like it, and it has all the same problems as Sidney.
Peterson
A bit long as a nickname for a shorter name. And I don't think we're that into it.
Other suggestions are welcome.
It seems like for us, coming up with a name is easy, and nicknames are not... we've had some issues deciding on nicknames with other names we like and plan to use too. (I say no to Becky for Rebecca, he says no to Becca. I say no to Ben for Benjamin, he says no to Jamie, we can agree on Jamin. We like Jeremiah--but he doesn't like Jem and I don't like Jerry. Etc.)
