My 9 mo old daughter has a hemangioma on her vaginal area that has become painful. Its about 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter. When I wipe after a diaper change, its clearly , become pretty painful for her. Is there anything I can do to reduce the pain. Its only started being painful in the last week or so, and I play to call the pediatrician on Monday, but wanted to see what your experiences are.

THanks!

Hello and welcome! :o)

I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier, but my mother's been in the hospital's icu since June 23rd and I can't pop in here as much right now.

That said, is your daughter's H possibly ulcerating (does it look like it's ripped open or red and raw?). Sometimes, that happens when the H grows too quickly for the skin. Often, that looks more painful than it is (my dd's lip H ulcerated, looked horrible, but she never complained of it hurting). BUT... with the area we're talking about with your dd, I'm sure that's not the case. Like when a child gets diaper rash, try to keep the area as dry as possible. Let her go w/o a diaper when possible. [yes, I understand how hard that is with an active 9mo old - maybe you can play on a blanket outside on your deck/patio or in the yard]

Please let me know what the doc says. I'll be thinking of you.

~Laurie

Hi Laurie, Thanks so much. I do think it was ulcerating, based on what I learned after having done more research on the web. But, it seems like it healed pretty quickly, and it looking much better already. It doesn't seem painful like it was last week. I'll keep watching it, and follow your suggestions if it ulcerates again.

Could any of this be related to the shrinking and going-away process? What should I look for when it does start to shrink?

Thanks,

Kathy

I'm happy to hear your daughter's ulceration is healing. They're not fun to deal with in any location, much less in the diaper area which is hard to keep dry. Hopefully, this will be the last one you'll need to deal with.

Almost always, ulceration occurs during proliferation (growth phase) not involution (going away phase). After an hemangioma grows to its fullest, there's a static period (can be short or long... no "usuals" in this case) before involution begins. Signs to look for that point to involution are lessening of color or even looking greyish. Once the hemangioma is fully involuted, it might leave a bit of discolored skin behind or it may not. Depending on how large the H got, it might leave a bit of puckered skin that was so distended it couldn't go back to normal. Of course, in your dd's case, unless she's going to be a Playboy model, no need to worry about that. ;o)

Thanks... and let's hope the matter of this hemangioma, and her life's work never actually collide!

The pediatrician sort of hemmed and hawed, and then said the best way he could think of to say it was... "her husband will never know it was ever there."

Thanks

Kathy
