hello, i am having a bit of a problem, i want to switch my dd from soy formula to a milk based formula. i got a couple cans of carnation good start gentle plus and am currently able to mix 1 part soy to 2 parts gentle...(a 6 oz. bottle ) so far so good. well she will soon be on all milk based and i am having issues because i currently recieve wic and they only use similac formula who i hear doesnt make a milk based gentle only a lacto free sensitive.  my question is are they the same thing? or does the gentle have lactose in it or not? i am confused and because of our issues with similac advanced in the beginning i am afraid to take her to that too soon. should i just buy more gentle and use that for a bit and then make the switch to similac advanced?  she is already 8 mos old but we had to stop using soy due to severe constipation(i used to partially breastfeed so that helped keep her from constipation but i had to stop). please help me i am so lost as to what to do? we live on unemployment so i cant afford to give up the wic and buy 4 mos. worth of formula!

gentel formula still has lactose in it.  for it to be lactose free it must say so.

My lo used to use Simulac lactose free not becaue he is lactose intolerant.. just because all the other formulas except simulac and nestly good start were way to hard on his tummy..he had colic.  and when i gave him enfimal he was in sooooo much pain.. i hated to see him like that.  one tip I got from my sister was when you switch over to the new formula is to put a tiny drop and i mean a drop of olive oil in the bottle that you mixed.. it helps to settle there tummys and they don't have that issue of gas , consipation when you change the formula. do it for two days.. it really helped us.. and if your worried about the oil in the fomula it is ok read the ingrediance there is oil in the formula so it is perfectly safe but only use a drop..

also i never had an issue with simulac lactose free.. lo never got consipated i would recomend it over all the other formulas.  give it a try.  ( it does not mean your baby can 't have lactose.. ) it just means there body may not be able to handel the other formulas right now.

by the way my lo is now 8 months and can now take enfimel.  but i still prefer simulac and good start

if you don't want to use lactose free one.. try the advance simulac.. but the lactose free is milder

No, they are not the same thing. Similac Sensitive has no lactose in it, but Good Start does. There are actually very few babies that are lactose intolerant, and as long as your baby handles lactose fine, the lactose is good for them because it keeps the lactase (I think that's how it's spelled...) working in the gut. There are definitely some babies that do quiet well on Similac Sensitive, so you could always try it, but from what I've read it's a good idea to keep them on a basic milk formula if they can handle it.  Also, the protein source in Similac is 100% ceasin (sp?) where as the protein source in Good Start is 100% whey, which they then go ahead and break down even further, which is what they claim makes their formula so gentle on baby's tummies.  For comparision, Enfamil is 60% ceasin/40% whey which is the most similar to breast milk.

I do say that given that you are on WIC though and dealing with unemployment, I can totally understand you wanting to stay with similac since they are the formula that is covered in your state.  My suggestion is to go ahead and give the similac sensitive a try and see how your LO does with it.  I've never really heard anyone who is on similac sensitive complain about their LO not tollerating it.

Thanks to Angie, Lindy and Tara for the awesome siggies!

Hi, and welcome to the board!

I think the OP pretty much summed up what I wanted to say so I don't have anything to add, just wanted to welcome you and hope you stick around! :)
