Hi! I just stumbled on this board and I am so glad I did! I usually post on PAL and Multiples board...I have 17 day old boy/girl twins. Our daughter was eating well until Monday...now she takes 45 min to finish 1 1/2 to 2 oz and she is sooo gassy. She farts ALL the time and sometimes they are "wet" farts (I am so sorry to be so explicit!) so I have to change her diaper a lot and now she has diaper rash. I feel so bad!

She is fussy at night and just seems uncomfortable. Her poop is a yellow mustard color. I am thinking it has to do with her formula causing painful gas, but I am not sure.

My doc seems hesitant to change her formula, but I would really like to try it.
Do you think it sounds like a formula issue?!
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Shayna

Hi Shayna, welcome to the board! Congrats on your twins! :)

It seems like she could be having an issue with the formula. Since I didn't go through that I'm not sure what the steps are. I would talk to your ped again and be persistent, maybe she is lactose intolerant..

In the meantime what I have heard that helps with the gas and the pain is to place her on her belly when she is napping and you're around to watch her because the heat will help break up the gas. Also using your palms and placing them on her belly can help as well. There is always gripe water as well, you can give it in the bottle or by a dropper.

Some of the ladies on here have experience with this and I'm sure they will chime in as well, hope this helps for now, good luck and keep us posted! :)

Hi Shayna!

Congrats on your babies!  I, like your Doctor, would be hesitant to change the formula until you have exhausted all other options.  Changing formula can also cause discomfort in baby's tummy. 45 mins for a couple ounces is definately too long!  I have a few ideas I would try...

First of all, is she eating ready to eat formula, concentrate, or powder?  Ready to eat is considered the easiest on the tummy.  If making indivual powder bottles try not to shake as the bubbles can cause extra gas.  I made a batch of formula daily and poured/heated as needed.  Sometimes the baby may not agree with a certain bottle or nipple.  What kind of bottles are you using?  If she doesn't like her nipple, she could be taking in extra air which is causing the gas and causing her to take so long to eat.  My DD was terribly gassy on playtex drop-ins, gerber, and evenflo.  The first time I gave her a Dr. Brown's I could just tell she took it so much nicer as soon as I put it to her mouth!  You may find out what works for your DS will not work for your DD.  That's why they have 854,083,999 different types of bottles on the market.  Is your DD getting good burps?  Try putting gentle pressure on her tummy or even a baby massage to help relieve the gas.  Bycycling her legs can help too.  I will try and think of other possibilites and will post as I think of them.

Hi,

My lo had very bad colic..  and it was related to the formula plus i was bf'ing as well.. but not getting enough hind milk.  so it was addign to the colic.  the formula that he was on was emfinal and  i would not recomend to anyone.. it really cause him a lot of pain .. the easiest formula for babies to take are  nestly good start or simulac sensitive.   I also used other bottles ameda, playtex,  but the ones we found really helped were born free once i started to use them the gas also went away.  you may also try burping half way of feeding.   And bringing lo's knees up the the tummy by lifting los feet bending the kneens towards the tummy like riding a bike.. do it a couple times after eating.. or when you burb lo.. bend lo a bit forward.. again like lo will touch toes but just a little bend over. then burp but the best thing to get the gas out is to use a sling and put lo in the kangaroo position. t works wounders.  you can walk around with them in it all day she will feel better an it will also help with eating as well

Thanks for the advice! I have tried about 4 different bottles (medela, playtex, born free and Dr. Brown's) out of the 4, I think I have the best luck with the Dr. Brown's so I am going to stick with that. We were using powder, but the past 4 feedings I switched to the ready-made formula and I have actually seen a difference! She is finishing more of her bottle and doing it a little faster. She even ate 3 oz this morning!! She is still gassy, but burping after a while (and farting a lot still!)
I have never heard of the bicycling, but I will try it!
Thank you for the help!!
