Lactose Free Formula Questions

Hello. I have a 4 week old boy and an older boy who will be 3 in October. My first had to be on lactose free after having problems with regular as well as soy formula. So...yesterday my baby had some major gas all day long and had that stomach gurgling that I remembered from my older boy. So late last night I went out and bought some lactose free Similac.

My question is...is there any "downside" to having my baby on LF formula? Like is it missing anything he would be getting from regular formula? I noticed it does not have the prebiotics like Enfamil Premium. Anything else?

I googled it and found this article: http://parentingsolved.typepad.com/parenting_solved/2008/05/say-no-to-lacto.html.

If this is true, why do babies have a better time on lactose free formula than regular (the above article suggests that LF formula is not needed but I disagree. My first baby had a horrible time on everything else).

Finally, Similac Sensitive (what I just bought last night to help my little guy) has a lot of air in it when I mix the formula, almost foamy when I feed him. Anyone have any tips to get rid of this?

Oh, and with my first, I could only use Similac LF because Enfamil LF and store brands made him consipated but Similac did not, Anyone else experience this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to the board! Congrats on your newborn! :)

I don't have much experience with special formulas, I used Similac advanced and never had issues. I will say though that I don't support that article. I've known many moms that had to go from using reg formula to LF and there was a huge difference in the baby, so that cannot be a fluke or for nothing! I know some of the ladies on here have experience with this and I'm sure they'll be of more help than me....lol!

Please keep us posted!

Hi and welcome.

i also had this issue I can honsetly say that nestly good start and simulac are the very easy on little tummies.  my lo had horible colic  i had him on enfiml when he came out of the hosptial.. this is what they started him on.. well everytime he ate he was in pain.   i then used nestly and it was way better.. but it had lots of bubbles.. that is the powder kind.. to get rid of that.. use the ovel or macals i think it is called drops put the drops in the blottle of formula it will get rid of the gas bubbles and also help your lo.

then my sister told me to try simulac.. lactose free.. my dr said that they prefer them to stay on the lactose so there system gets used to it.. that is the only reason.. but my lo was in so much pain.. mind you he does not have an issue with lactose now.. it just because his body was still adjusting.. it was to hard for him at the time.  he is not 8 months and can now take any formula even the emfinal.. but i still don't give that to him. anyway.. he was on simulac for the longest time and it agreed with him i also tried him on the simulac advance and it was just the same no issues.. so maybe you don't need lactose free just simulac.. as it is better on there tummies.

hope this helps.

oh i forget to mention it is best to use the instand formula not the powered one as the powdered one has more gas.. you can you consitrate were you mix with water or ready feed one.  i know it is more expensive but it will get rid of the pain lo is having..  , no gas at all
