I want to wean my 4 month old DD from breast to formula bottle. She is very stubborn and absolutely refuses any kind of bottle regardless of it's contents. We have been gently trying to get her to accept a bottle for about 4-5 weeks now. We've tried it all. I have decided that today, I am GOING to get her to take a bottle. That's obviously my first hurdle. I have an Avent bottle w/ stage 2 silicone nipple and a Playtex drop-in latex nipple. I wish I had a Vent-Air but I don't. I have a VERY heavy let down. My milk will squirt about 1' in front of me so I can only assume that a stage 2 is best! I also assume that the latex is stage 1, it was given to me.

I have some EBM that I am going to try first. I nursed her this morning b/c I couldn't deal with fussiness this early! LOL! After she wakes up from her morning nap, that's it...no more boob! She must take a bottle! (I do have a pump and have discussed how to do this with the lactation consultant.)

My questions are:

Does this sound right, first trying to get her to take a bottle with EBM and then slowly mixing in the formula as she starts taking more EBM bottles or should I just go straight to formula with water and no more boob at all, ever? What are your transition suggestions for a stubborn baby?

How do i know if she gets constipated vs. just less poop from formula?

How do I prevent stomach problems for her? I have 3 different kinds of formula: Enfamil Gentlease (purple), Similiac Advance (blue) and Similac Isomil Advance Soy#(ed). Her dad is very lactose intolerant, no idea what she is.

What is the rule on switching to different kinds of formulas? Can I use the cans that I have and then go get a generic kind of which ever she likes best?

Any other suggestions? I don't know anything about FF or how to do this.

Thank you very much for your reply's in advance.

Hi, and welcome to the board! :)

Let me just say that I have no experience with going from BF to FF because I FF from the start, so I will answer all your formula related questions. :)

<<How do i know if she gets constipated vs. just less poop from formula?>>

Well FF babies can go up to a week without a BM and that is considered normal. If you see her pushing, going red, and crying, and nothing coming out I would assume possible constipation.

<<How do I prevent stomach problems for her? I have 3 different kinds of formula: Enfamil Gentlease (purple), Similiac Advance (blue) and Similac Isomil Advance Soy#(ed). Her dad is very lactose intolerant, no idea what she is.>>

Try and stick to 1 formula, trying all different kids will upset her tummy. I used similac advance and had no issues at all. Try with that maybe and if you see that it does not agree with her then talk to your ped and you may want to switch her.

<<What is the rule on switching to different kinds of formulas? Can I use the cans that I have and then go get a generic kind of which ever she likes best?>>

Like I said above, switching is not a good idea, I'd pick a brand and stick to it. Generic brands are the exact same as name brands.

<<Any other suggestions? I don't know anything about FF or how to do this.>>

In the beginning I recommend ready to feed because it's sterile and easier on their bellies. When she is tolerating formula well i would then stick to concentrate because again it is sterile and powdered formula is not. Also it's easier to make a mistake when mixing powdered formula than it is concentrate (concentrate is simply 1 can of formula to equal parts water). I would also recommend buying nursery water (sterile water especially for babies), it's cheap and easier than boiling the water and having to let it cool.

That's all I can think of for now, I hope this helps. Good luck and keep us posted! :)

Hi and thank you very much for your response.

I will take your advice about not switching formulas. I had heard that before but just wasn't sure how true it was. Also, thanks for the info on constipation. After I read it I thought, DUH! I should have known that. LOL!

Also, I had not considered concentrated formula. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

My SIL said NOT to use Nursery Water. It has flouride in it and babies should not get flouride because of the following: http://environmentalchemistry.com/yogi/environmental/200701fluorideininfantdiets.html.

I called our local water plant and got the info on our water. I am comforable with the results and will use purified tap water for her bottles. It's cheaper and creates less waste.

Thanks again.

i gave her her first 2 oz of formula, Gentlease powder. About 30 min after she ate she got real fussy so i gave her Mylecon which helped. She has burped a few times since then.

i wonder, is fussiness to be expected or is this the wrong formula for her? I plan on buying a can of concentratred but should I not get Gentlease?

Any advice on what brand is best to start a BF baby switching to Formula?

thx.

Also, I just read on http://www.babycenter.com/0_choosing-formula-a-primer_1334669.bc that powered formula containers contain far less BPA vs. ready-made and concentrate containers.

Any comments? I have no idea...I'm just asking.
