Hi,

This is my third nursling so I have lots of nursing experience under my belt, however, this is the first time I've ever encountered something like this.

DS is 11 mos old, teething, and was up all night last Tuesday night and I was basically a human pacifier.  While he was nursing, it felt like he was scraping my nipple with his teeth and despite my efforts to adjust him, he continued.  Ever since, there is a small red area on my nipple and a tiny nick or cut area.  It is REALLY painful when he nurses even though I make sure that his lips are fish-like and he seems latched on properly.  It hurts the minute he latches on until he stops and can vary in intensity while he is nursing.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Talia

NAK

scraping is not uncommon when teething. tips: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/older-baby/biting.html#scraping

Follow normal nipple healing procedures. saline soaks, OTC APNO (let us know if you do not have the recipe) etc http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplehealing.html

do not use lansinoh if you have broken skin it can encourage yeast.

follow up with additional questions.

you can make your own APNO with recipe from our CL Paula:

"make your own OTC APNO cream, using hydrocortisone, lotrimin and polysporin. We used a 1/8 measuring spoon from a dollar store measuring spoon set, and took equal squirts of each and put into small sealable container. Blended well (with toothpick) and applied this after each nursing. This "recipe" was giving to my dd by an LC friend and it worked wonders. It does NOT need to be washed off - if you see any ointment remaining next nursing or pumping time, just wipe it away with damp cloth."
