Our latch problems have been explained. My DD is tongue tied. I saw an LC today and she gave us a tongue exercise to do w/DD before nursing her that she said could help. How well does this usually work? I'm hoping that DD won't need to have her frenulum trimmed. We'll do it if necessary, of course, but hopefully not.

I'm going to call the LC Monday and we'll see where we are then.

Hi=

I probably wouldn't let it go much past a week without seeing a big improvement. You don't want too much time to go by to compromise baby's weight gain, your milk supply (if baby isn't emptying the breast effectively), baby learns to latch improperly, etc. For lurkers, more on tounge tie: http://www.breastfeeding-basics.com/html/tonguetie.shtml

I'm thinking, now, after researching it last night that if we're not seeing enough improvement by monday that we'll just go ahead and see the ENT doc. I'm sore, still, and she's not really emptying my that well. I had to pump again last night and got almost two ounces from each side in less than 10 minutes with a manual pump. This wasn't too long after nursing her on both sides, too :( Maybe an 1/2 - 1 hour after.

She did sleep a little more last night, and was going closer to two hours between feedings early in the morning, instead of having me basically up from 3-4 am on, so our latch has improved somewhat.

Yay for some improvement!! Do keep us posted :)

I want to point out for lurkers that most women get between .5-2 ounces TOTAL for both breasts combined when pumping. I believe you know this Tara, but I need ot point out for lukers to remember that diaper output is what we need to look at to determine if she's getting enough milk. If you had oversupply last time, it's most likely that you have it again and we might not want to be pumping that much. If you have oversupply, she can be getting enough milk without 'emptying' you. We need ot watch the diapers You're having latching issues due to the tounge tie so the milk transfer is likely a problem, but I just needed to point that out :)

If you're pumping for comfort/relieve engorgement, it should only be 2-3 minutes at the most.

My son was tongue-tied and as a result I was very sore and he screamed with a tummy ache between every feeding. We had an ENT clip his frenulum when he was 6 wks old. It took that long for us to determine what the problem was because our pediatrician didn't think it was a problem based on baby's weight gain. He was somehow getting enough but I was miserably sore.

After we saw the ENT, nursing was painless and baby was comfortable after nursing. The difference was like night and day!

I hope everything goes well for you and your baby.
