Hi everyone!!! I have an almost 4 week old, and she is a very short nurser. I have a lactation consultant coming out on today to help me out and see what is going on. She is usually no more than 5 minutes, and sometimes she doesn't even go to the other side. Problem is that I am wondering if its because of my forceful let down. She does fine, then will gulp down that fast flow, sometimes pulling off to cough for a sec...sometimes having a hard time getting her breath back. Time for a burp....Then sometimes she goes back on. Sometimes she doesn't. My LC told me to pump that fast flow out first and then let her nurse. She can't possibly be getting that good milk in the 5-7 minutes can she??   She has great wets/dirties, and I'm pretty sure she is gaining appropriately. So we'll see. She can usually hold off for about 2 hours...but sometimes its even only 1 1/2 hours...so I'm gonna work on pumping that fast flow out and see if I can get her to get that high calorie stuff and see if she can last longer. When I did it yesterday (pumping) I felt like she wasn't satisfied at my breast, she was definitly quite fussy, which made me so sad for her. My son was a cluster feeder for a long time, but he is 2 1/2 now, and I really don't have the time to nurse her all the time!! Its rough, but I have no intentions of quitting any time soon. I made it to 8 1/2 months with my son..my goal is to surpass that at any length! Sorry about babbling...

Could she just be one of those quick little eaters?? I hate to complain, because really, it helps that she isn't hanging on me for a 1/2 hour...gives me more time with my son too!! :)

It is certainly normal for some babies to be able to spend as little as 5 minutes at the breast and get all they need though it somewhat unusual for it to happen as early it has with your baby. Usually, it takes some at least 6-12 weeks for the baby to become more efficient in suckling at the breast. The fast flow may be contributing to his efficiency. As long as he is gaining well and doing the appropriate minimum number of wet and dirty diapers for his age then I wouldn't worry too much.

You may want to read this info on forceful letdown though:

Certainly if the baby is having plenty of diapers and gaining ok then she’s certainly getting enough in the short feedings. Here’s more:

Is my baby getting enough milk?

Here’s some information on oversupply:

Hope this helps.
