A little more on Valtrex from Hale 2002...

Per Hale, the Lactation Risk Category for Valacyclovir (Valtrex) is L1 (safest). Valacyclovir is a prodrug that is rapidly metabolized in the plasma to acyclovir. Acyclovir is the active drug that is primarily used as an antiviral for herpes simplex and other viral infections. Valacyclovir has much better oral absorption than the parent drug, acyclovir. Acyclovir milk levels are quite low. No pediatric concerns reported via milk.

For comparison:

Acyclovir (Zovirax) is AAP approved for nursing moms. Hale ("Medications and Mother's Milk" 2002 ed.) lists it as L2 (safer) for nursing moms. Acyclovir is used directly in newborns.

The Lactation Risk Category for Famciclovir (Famvir) is L2 (safer).

Hope you feel better soon!
