Here's a link to one of LaRee's posts, where I got my best info!

http://boards2.parentsplace.com/messages/get/ppbreastfeeding748/36/1.html

And in case that link doesn't work, since it is to an old BFing board post, here are a few others:

http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T080400.asp
http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/healthinfo/wholehealth/acidophilus.html
http://www.health.co.uk/acidophilus.html
http://www.geocities.com/nutriflip/Supplements/Acidophilus.html
http://www.healthy.net/asp/templates/article.asp?PageType=article&ID=1263

I don't recall which of these were in LaRee's post (link doesn't seem to be working) or which were particularly good, other than Dr. Sears.

I *do* recall that around 3 billion live cultures is a good general dose for daily use, and I've read differing accounts of 10 billion, 15 billion, and 20 billion cultures during thrush or antibiotic treatment. Being somewhat conservative, and prone to intestinal upset, I lean toward the 10 billion dosage! I also recommend starting with 1 the first few days, then two, then work up to three capsules, so your gut has a chance to adjust, or you may get really gassy or even diarrheal. (Is that a word? LOL)

Guess that's about it.

can I pop in with a ? for you on this topic?

What brand and potency do you use? I've been using the ones from GNC, but their highest potency is 1.5 billion per capsule. Is there a higher dosing brand? and where could one find it?

TIA

Mine are by Nature's Way, and are called "Intestinal Release Primadophilus." The label says they are "enteric coated to survive stomach acid." Don't know how important that is. . .this is just the only brand available at the closest health food store (about 30 miles away.) They have 2.9 billion lactobaccilus microorganisms per capsule, so I take one daily, or 3 when fighting yeast.

I recall that Dr. Sears recommended Culturelle brand in his article on acidophilus, and might even have a link to their website on his page. I know they are available over the internet, at any rate. Here is a link to his info:

The general recommendation I've seen is to take about 10-40 billion live cultures per day. LLL website says to take 40 billion units per day acidophilus (http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/thrush.html). Dr. Sears suggests using Culturelle, one capsule daily (http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T080400.asp). Culterelle has 10 billion live active cells per capsule.

The medical studies I looked at used between 6 billion (for preemies) & 20 billion live cultures per day for various problems. I've seen 2-5 billion cfu/day recommended as a "maintenance" dose.

For what it's worth, I have some in my fridge right now that I got from the refrigerator section of the health food store - it's NOW brand, 8 billion Acidophilus & Bifidus per capsule.
