Aha! I asked a dear friend (an IBCLC who runs pumping station) for help here. This is her response:
She needs to clean the motor out first. Suction is probably compromised due to milk getting into it. Have her stand over the sink looking down into the flange part of the breastshield.
She should then turn the motor on and slowly begin pouring teaspoonfulls of warm water down through the funnel/tunnel of the breastshield.
She should start to see water/milk shooting out the sides of the motor. This should be repeated several times. She also should either replace or clean well the valve/membrane assembly (yellow part with white disc) that fits on the end of the breastshield. If cleaning, she should separate the two and boil both for a few minutes. Dry well and
replace. If she has not been routinely separating and cleaning these two parts she is just asking for trouble down the road!
When pumping have her turn the valve/membrane away from her not facing her. For some reason this keeps milk from backing up in the breastshield better.
HTH :)
