manual pump for someone large?

I'm ready to send back my rental Medela pump because I don't need it anymore... finally!
I need a good, comfortable, effective manual pump to pump off "extra" in the a.m. just to help her my little one latch on easier and to pump the very rare, occasional bottle.

Since I need to use the larger breastshields that come with the "Personal Fit" Medela starter set, I'm very reluctant to purchase a manual pump -- which is not returnable if the shield or nipple space is too small-- before getting some feedback and recommendations on manual pumps from other moms who are. I'm leaning toward the Avent or new soft shield Medela pump. Any advice and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Laurie and Kathryn ( 3 months)

Hi Laurie and congrats on not need the PIS anymore!  I'm not much help on the manual pump issue.  I now the Avent is very popular and if they have horns that fit it that could be an option.  Try also posting to the other pumps sites at:

Thanks for your reply. I actually contacted the Medela company and they said, yes, the soft shell that comes with the manual Harmony pump does come off and you can use other size Medela shields with it. I bought the Harmony pump last night and used it a little this morning, and it does work very well for me. Seems to have fewer parts and adjustmends than the Avent ( Babies R Us had demo models set out to look at of both Harmony and Avent) and is pretty easy to clean and set up. The Harmony shield isn't as cushiony or as "sticky" as the Avent, but seems to need very little hand pressure to be effective, just like the Avent claims, too. An advantage to the Medela pump is also that since so many people use Medela electric pumps, the shields, little white valves, yellow valve holders, and the Avent bottle adapter that lets you attach Avent bottles right to your Medela breast shields all work with the Harmony manual pump, too !! And those replacement parts are readily available at many stores now, unlike Avent, which I think you have to order any replacement pump parts from the manufacturer. Thought this mini-review might come in handy (non pun intended :) if anyone else would happen to ask an opinion on a manual pump.

I'm glad that's working out for you and thanks for the review.  I always tell women who are looking for a specific product to do a search at this board, so your review will come up if they search for Harmony.  Thanks again!
