This story contains some sensitive matter, so I won't paste the article into my post here. This link will take you to an article about the case, if you're interested in reading about it in detail:

http://www.lifenews.com/int1360.html

Basically, the body of a deceased newborn baby boy was found in a trash bag, inside a bin at a recycling plant in England. The preliminary post-mortem reports show evidence of a "traumatic birth", and officials have made statements about their assumption that this woman had give birth alone without medical help. To wit:

<<<"I think it's fair to say from the post-mortem that the birth was a traumatic birth and also that there was no professional presence when the baby was delivered," he told the newspaper. "It's perfectly possible that this woman or girl has given birth without anybody being there or with anybody who knew what they were doing." >>>

Is anyone else concerned about what statements like that could mean for planned unassisted childbirth? This story is apparently getting international attention, and I wonder whether there will be a negative light shed on all births that are undertaken without a "professional presence" because of it.

I don't think this will have a negative impact on unassisted births. The impression I have got is that the authorities are not thinking foul play was involved and by putting it out there in this way the mother may be more likely to come forward and receive medical help. My feeling is the main concern is if the baby was in such a bad shape what kind of shape is the mother in.

I got that sense as well, but then I began to wonder if it would lead to people thinking that those who have unassisted births might also be capable of abandoning babies to hide what might have gone wrong, if anything. KWIM? I just worried that it had something of a pejorative feel to it, as well as genuine concern for the mother, which I do think was there too.

The few bits I've seen didn't feel pejorative. In fact, after the initial day or so of reporting, there's been nothing more that I've heard in the news.

I was actually meaning to ask you if you'd heard anything, since it's semi-local to you, being in the UK. I really hope the mother is okay, and that they can figure out what happened with the baby.
