So I am the mom of four kids and as kids do, they grew up. I have a car seat that is in perfect condition but well over the 5 year age limit. No one in my family uses it and it has been in the garage for 2 years.

How do I get rid of it? I can't just put it in the trash because it won't fit in the bin. Plus, I don't want someone taking it because it looks to be in good shape.

I tried doing a search but couldn't find any previous posts on this. Sorry if I missed it.

Cheers
Liza in WI

Well, you can check to see if there is a car seat recycling program in your area. There do not seem to be many, but you might find one nearby. You could also contact your a local tech or SafeKids to see if they recycle/dispose of seats.

If those options don't work, then you want to destroy the seat. If you're handy with hammers/tools, you could beat it up yourself.

Otherwise, remove the cover (depending on what it is, you might be able to sell or trade it) and cut the seat straps. Write *DO NOT USE -- EXPIRED!* on the shell with a marker. Wrap the whole thing up in a black plastic trash bag (so that nobody will be able to tell what it is) and set it out with your trash on pick-up day.

I can actually use the cover in a quilting project I'm doing for the Kyle David Miller Foundation.  What I've done in picking up expired carseats from freecycle and craigslist is cut the straps off (I use them in the quilt too), take the cover off, shred the foam, and run the plastic through our apartment's trash compactor.  If the compactor wasn't an option, I would write things like, "Crappy mom uses me, deadly seat, my parents fished this out of the trash because they're too cheap to buy me a good seat!" and other inflammatory things on the seat (it works especially well for infant seats!) and go to the local police station and/or fire department and see if they'll destroy it for me.  They took about 6 last time, but they no longer accept them anymore, so I'd probably put some goggles on and take a hammer to it myself just to save the trouble!
