Hello everyone.. My name is Tiffany and my husband and I are stationed in Germany with a US army unit.
I have a few questions, since people at our base are so ignorant and can't help me to properly install my car seats!
First off I have a 2 year old son who weights 30 LBS and he has a graco nautilis. And my 5 month old daughter has a convertible graco my ride 65 and of course it's rear facing.
As for my questions My son seemed to like his sisters car seat. So my question is since he is long can he rear face.. I mean wouldn't his legs be crammed up? We are driving 6 hours in december to go to Italy for 5 nights so I wanna make sure he is comfortable.. And of course that the car seat is properly install since we will be driving on the autobahn.
As for my daughters car seat the my ride 65.. it doesn't move from side to side but my concern is that is it suppose to move forward? like if you grab were the head should be and move it towards to seat. (if that makes sense)

Anyways thanks so much

Your son can absolutely RF, and would be much safer that way. Kids can RF as long as they are under the RF weight limit for the seat (40 pounds for the MR65), and they have at least 1 inch of hard car seat shell above the top of their head. Kids actually seem to be more comfortable when RF a lot of the time, since their legs aren't just dangling, but instead are supported. They can sit cross-legged, drape their legs over the sides of the car seat, prop their feet on the vehicle seat back, or some combination of that. Remember that little kids are much more flexible than adults. Just look at how they sit when they're just around the house. Here's an album of older, bigger RF kids (click on each picture to see the whole thing, and see how they put their legs):

To answer your other question, your daughter's seat is supposed to move in the way you describe, where the top of the child seat moves toward the vehicle seat back when lifted or pushed. It's called cocooning, and is perfectly normal. As long as the seat is moving less than an inch at the belt path (and less is better, of course), the install is fine.
