So I've been trying to get ahold of Ollie's ST because I wanted to talk to her about his lack of development.  Well, it's been next to impossible (which kinda ticks me off) but yesterday I was talking to his EI therapist, so I asked her.

And what I asked was this: "What is your experience with a 2 year old that is not babbling, and doesn't have any receptive language?  I need a reality check; I need to know if his lack of development to this point is pointing towards MR."

And her response was that although it's still quite early to tell, that an MR label is a good possibilty :(
That he has obvious severe cognitive delays, which suggest more is wrong than just a "speech" problem.
She also went on to say I should speak more with his ST about it, as well as with his doc when we go on the 20th.
And that nothing is written in stone...blah...blah...blah....

Talk about being hit in the gut with a ton of bricks :(
I knew this in my heart, but hearing one of his therapists pretty much agree made it a bit too real.....life is not fair >:(

(((hugs)))

That must have been so hard to hear.  It's still early days to be putting a label like that on your son though.  Ollie's Paed should have a better idea of his cognitive abilities so it's probably a good idea to have a chat with him/her when you next see them.

I am grandma to Abigail, and I taught mentally retarded children for 20 years.  The word retarded is ugly, and no one likes to hear it.  It really only means mentally slow, but many horrible connotations have been placed on it.  Now for my real point.  I had kids who could read, write, play tons of sports, drive, clean, cook, and do anything that so called normal kids could do.  Yet, they were considered retarded.  It is just a label, and does not in any way limit ollie's abilities.  People aren't even using the word anymore because it connotes such ugly connotations.  Instead the proper usage today is mentally challenged.  And aren't we all mentally challenged in one area of our lives or another.  Don't let people place limits on Ollie as he has tons of time to learn and develop.  sharon

NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE
we do not yet know the extent of our baby sidney's delays either.
i spoke to my uncle who had a son who was mentally retarded yesterday and my cousins name was Mino (he died of enlarged heart at 22) well my uncle was telling me although he was pretty MR and i remember he was he also eventually learned to communicate with them in hungarian and english and most importantly they had a lot of joy with him. one of the most helpful things one of my friends did when i told him of all sidneys delays was write back asking me does he enjoy his baths? what makes him laugh? ect and it really helped me to refocus on the pleasurable moments. all that said not knowing is hard and i am sorry for your pain. one thing that has helped me a lot is to just focus on the therapy and stop asking questions about the future ..... i have been told my therapists that kids have surprised them in both directions. ones they thought would really improve did not and visa versa.
