I am expecting my third child. I am currently sitting in the hospital where I have been for a few weeks due to complications (placenta previa). I am 35 1/2 weeks today and will have an amnio next Tues and then hopefully deliver at 36 weeks 2 days if the baby's lungs are mature. I do not know whether I am having a boy or a girl. I have two girls already. The question of whether or not we will circ should we have a boy has been an issue between DH and me since our last pregnancy. I would rather not circ and DH would prefer to circ. We do live in a community where circ is the norm although I am sure there are some people who choose not to. I continue to believe our best option is just to not circ, but DH and his family feel strongly about circ. At this point, I would like to just request that we do not circ. immediately since the baby will be premature which I have heard increases the risk of bleeding. I am hoping that we can continue to discuss the pros and cons once baby is home and that maybe my DH will get used to having a baby who is not circ and will come to agree with me. Does anyone have any references that speak specifically to the issue of preemie circ? I posted on the preemie board and most of the ladies there did it in the hospital the day before discharge so baby could have 24 hour medical supervision afterwards. I can understand that rationale but since I don't want it done at all I am hoping for other input.

TIA

I had a preemie son and I always thought the issue was overall they aren't usually stable enough, bleeding could be the issue too though, that makes sense. How early the baby is matters too - my son was over 6 weeks old when he was ready to come home. I can't link it right now but my dh and I found the current AAP policy helpful. My story is a few posts down in this thread. The other threads above have some good info too and I'm sure others will have some good advice for dealing with spousal disagreement over circ.

Hi Kristen,

Welcome to the board and congrats on your new little one.  I had placenta previa with my second.  I spent 3 months on bedrest.  Not fun.  She is a happy healthy 19 year old now.  So she was worth it.

Now, about your possible son.  I would tell DH he has to do the research and find a MEDICAL reason to alter your newborns penis and put him through the risks of surgery. (don't worry he won't find any) It has to be a medical reason, so that leaves out the locker room and look like daddy arguments.  Otherwise you will not consent to it.  He may whine and cry, but he'll get over it.  Also make him watch the circ video.

If he does happen to find some lame medical excuse come back here and we'll help you counter it.

As for the family, if they raise a stink, simply look them in the eye and say, "your obsession with my son's penis is really starting to creep me out."  That usually takes care of it.

Good luck, Terri
