Well I am 36 weeks and at 20 weeks my baby was measuring in the 95th percentile. Today he measured in the 94th. When the Doctor gave me the results, he gave me the option of an early induction because of his size and also offered a C-section. My sister recently had a 10lb baby and was forced to have a c-section because he wouldnt fit through the birth canal. I fear the same thing that I am going to go through the effort just to have it fail and be disappointed. The baby was measuring 7lbs 5oz and that is at 35 wks and 6 days. any advice?

Welcome to the board and congrats on your upcoming birth. The problem with induction is that you run the risk of infection and emergent c-section because baby isn't ready to come and labor isn't progressing at an adequate pace. I personally would not have an induction if it were me, but that is my personal opinion. I would also not opt for the c-section, I would wait and see if I could deliver when the baby was ready to come. So many times the doctors are wrong with the weight of the baby and then you have a disappointed mom, or an angry mom because the decision was in a way taken away from her, or scared away from her. Me for example I was told my son would be lucky to be 5 lbs at birth he was 7lbs 2 oz. A GF of mine was told her baby would be 10lbs he was 8 lbs and a few oz. If you ask a mom about measurements and weight estimates done by ultrasound or gestational measurements you will find many many moms that have been given wrong information and made decisions that they may not have if they had not been given the information in the first place.

Personally I would wait it out a bit longer, ask for a ultrasound to measure and see if the measurements and the ultrasound measurements are close. Talk to your doctor and ask for risks for trying a vag birth with no medical intervention ie induction and the risk of a c0section vs the risks of a planned c-section. Ask yourself if you would be at peace with a c-section birth even if the baby turned out was an average birth weight, under 8 or 9 lbs.

You have a very difficult decision ahead of you, take your time to make the decision, don;t rush into it. If a c-section is the way you choose to go then please do read up on the sample birth plans that are in the section below, you will find many great items that will help you have a more enjoyable birth. Please do keep us posted, good luck to you.

Don't get the early induction. Doctors offer it, but all the stats say you're no less likely to ultimately need a c-section, and inductions have their own set of potential complications. I don't believe doctors' predictions on size or "fit" are worth any more than a random guess, anyway. (If you get the c-section, you can't prove it either way, but are free to imagine any reality you like. I don't lying to yourself that way.) You might want to ask about the hospital -- how quickly can you get a c-section if there is any trouble; how likely is it really that the time frame is an issue. (Most c-sections, seem to be less a matter of "emergencies" and more of "tapping out" after a too-long labor.)

I agree with stuartsmomma. I think the doctors are often wrong about weight. If I were in your shoes, I would wait it out and see what happens during labor. During my first pg, my son was breech and in a position that could be delivered vaginally. I opted to try the vaginal delivery. Part way through labor, he changed positions and I needed a C-Section. It was not a bg deal to switch to a C-Section during labor and I had an uneventful surgery with a relatively easy recovery. If you are planning on having more kids, it is best to avoid the C-Section if possible because there can be complications when you have several repeat C-Sections.
