Question about optional c-section?

Hello all....I haven't posted on this board before, but I thought it was the best place to get advice! I have 3 daughters, all born vaginally. DH and I are pregnant with our fourth and final child. My OB is giving me the option between vaginal or c-section. Partly because our last daughter was bigger than my vaginal canal could comfortably handle (forceps really aren't much fun) and partly because I am having my tubes tied after this birth. So my question is this: my recovery from all but my last delivery was relatively easy as my first two DD's were small. But my recovery from my last delivery was horrible. I don't want to "elect" to have a c-section for the sole purpose of getting my tubes tied, but it WOULD be the easiest way to get it done. Has anyone had vaginal then c-section deliveries? Was the recovery easier or harder after a c-section? This is something DH and I need to decide on, as I have a history of preterm labor. 1st DD was born at 36 weeks, 2nd DD at 34 weeks and went into active labor at 30 weeks with 3rd DD, but they were able to stop the labor - then ended up inducing me at 38.5 weeks. So I know I will be on bed rest most of my 3rd trimester (yay - not so much) and we want a delivery plan set in stone. My OB is concerned about the baby being too big for me to deliver vaginally anyways, so it almost seems like it would serve a dual purpose to just schedule the c-section and do it that way. We have a while to decide as I am not quite out of my first trimester yet, but when she brought it up at my appointment on monday it really got me to thinking. I am just so type-A that I like everything planned out long before it actually happens. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Rachel,

Thanks for stopping in to ask your question. Hopefully a few ladies will pop up to provide some input.

I have only had C sections, so I can't respond to the recovery time with a C vs. a vaginal birth. My sense, though, from others that have posted here is that the recovery from a C section is actually easier if you're going to end up with significant pelvic trauma from a vaginal birth. Many have commented that after having significant/severe tears and even reconstructive surgery... that a C section was 'nothin!

My experience was that my first C section was probably the worst. I had labored for 24 hours prior to giving birth though... but the hardest thing was not knowing what to expect. It can be a painful recovery... and you'll be sore for at least the first couple of weeks.

I think you could go either way in your situation. C sections will increase your birthing risks - so if you wanted to have a ton more kiddos, then it might not be a good option, but it doesn't sound like you're in that boat...

If you're sure that you want your tubes tied, you're ready to do it when this next one is born, and you're not tied to having a vaginal birth with the last one and/or see risks with a final vaginal birth... I say go for a C!~

Good luck with your decision!

Thank you so much for your input - I really appreciate it! Having been on the receiving end of an episiotomy (sp?) and over 200 stitches, I can't imagine anything that could be much more painful than that. I just don't want to choose a c-section for the sake of getting my tubes tied. yes, it would be easier, but that is no reason to choose. I think I'm going to talk to my doctor about it throughout the next two months as we will be monitoring the baby's growth. Thank you again for the info :-)

Rachel,

I just want to wish you the best with whatever you decide. I've only had a c/s, so I can't compare the recoveries. I will agree with the pp - it took a good 2 weeks to recover enough to feel comfortable, and I had to take pain meds for about a month afterwards. If you decide to choose a c/s, just find out as much as possible beforehand. I really do believe that knowing what to expect can make things much more manageable!

Well i have had 5 c-section and 1 vag and let me tell you  i hated c-section, thats the only thing that i am so scared of when i get pregnant. a vag birth was a fast healing process for me and not much pain at all. c-section pain afterward is not something i like to think about. every movement hurted. please really think about this decision and make sure you research c-section enough that you feel comfortable with your decision. good luck to you
