when can I TTC after a C?

I have a question for Moms who have had a C or know someone who has:

When can I try again?

I had my first, a baby girl, in June and had to have a C after pushing for two hours with no progress.  Turns out she was sunny-side-up and was never coming out the natural way.  I am hoping to have a natural birth the next time.

My Dr. says I have to wait a year to conceive again, but I think that is just the standard/overly cautious response.  Do you know of anyone who conceived sooner after a C without complications?

I am almost 35 and since DH & I want a big family, we don't have much time to spare.  I am fit and healthy and healed very quickly.  In fact, the dr. let me go home only two days after the birth.

I would love to hear your thoughts.  Thank you!

Hi Mary,

Welcome! I understand your situation. My babies were the same in that they ended up C section because of a secondary failure to progress (in the pushing stage!) Also - there was 14 months between my 1st C section and my VBAC attempt. A couple thoughts for you...

1) You are right that doctors will tell you a year. After my second C section, my doctor told me that seriously, I needed at least 6 months before #3 but that was because I'd only waited 4/5 months between #2 & #3. I was fine. I think you can try when you're ready...

2) Understand that if you want to have a VBAC attempt, a cautious doctor is going to be a bit more freaked out the closer that your babies are spaced. Be sure to go into your first visit saying that you want a VBAC and if the doctor hedges at all or isn't supportive, I would change providers. It's soooo important to find a good doc.

3) I think you're smart to be thinking about having another given that you want a larger family and your age... I'm right there with ya! I'll be 35 in a few months!

4) Know that if you do end up with a C section that you can still have a large family. It's all about how YOU look on the inside and how your uterus is holding up -- it's not about the number of C sections that you've had. Some women have 2 and are done while others can have many, many C sections without difficulty. The real risks of multiple Cs are placental issues (previa, accreta, pancreta, etc.)

G/L with growing your family and I hope that you'll come back and visit us from time to time! You also might want to check out the VBAC board....

Oh my goodness, that Molly is just beautiful!

So, I had an emergency c-section on March 3rd.  My doctor told me to "wait at least 6 months".  I did a ton of research on VBACs, hoping for one after a horrid c-section experience.  I found that it seems that 18 months is the normal time doctors seem to want between a c-section and a VBAC.  I'm going to ask my doc when I go, but that seems to be what I'm finding.

I'm pregnant now!  And our babies will be just over 16 months apart so I got pregnant when she was 7 months.  I'll be 33 when I have this LO.  SO I hear ya!  We're very open to a third so while I don't ideally want a c-section this time around, I don't mind it as long as we're good to go for a third.

HTH...I'm still in the research mode myself.  I think you can get pregnant any time you want but it's more an issue for trying to have a VBAC.  Although if you're willing to go the midwife route, I think they're much more supportive of doing VBACs whenever possible.
