When does school start for your kids? Same class/school or something new this year? Any concerns going into it? Do they get therapy at school? Do they enjoy going??

I can't believe its time. My kids start a week from yesterday, the 19th. I am so not ready this year. I'm not ready for summer to end but I'm sure I will enjoy some mommy time. Both kids are in the same schools as last year. Kevin goes into second grade which seems impossible! He's not a huge fan of school but he does okay. I think he would rather be home watching tv in his pjs all day, LOL!
Kristin is in the same class as last year so all is good. some of her typical friends are off to K, but her boyfriend Luke is still there and I'm sure there will be new kids to play dressup with and make silly noises for her. She definitely enjoys school and I love the school and teachers. Only issue sometimes is the bus with selzures etc but I think the same drivers should be back and they know her pretty well now.

Matthew doesn't start back until Sept 8th - Michigan law that public schools start after Labor Day - to help the tourism industry.

Matthew is going back to his Austism room - the class may change a bit this year - last year it  was 6 kids, teacher, 2 parapros.  He does get ST & OT though we continue it privately as well.  Last year Matthew was having some anxiety - didn't seem as bad in the ESY - we'll have to watch it.  This has been the summer of Matthew - bike riding, scooter rides, swimming & trips - I think he is going to find it rough going back to school full time.

Aidan starts Preschool in September!  I am excited but also totally freaked out, for several reasons:
1) Aidan is my only child, so i've never done this whole school thing before
2) Aidan is three, so he's never done this whole school thing before
3) He will be in a full time special needs school
4) He will have to ride the bus!

I've been home with him the past three years but really need to go back to work.  Well, actually I have been working full time--24/7, without pay, as Aidan's case manager LOL--even though he'll be in school now I will still have to take him to all the same doctor appts. etc. (he has six just in September and will have to be absent on those days). Just wondering how I will manage it all while working full time.  I want to be active in his school and education, and want to be on top of all of his medical issues like I am now.

I'm also bummed knowing that if I had a normally developing three year old and a different family situation, there's no way I'd be shuttling him off to school full time.  But we gotta do what we gotta do...wahhhh, I feel like he's leaving me :(

Aww, Kyra
Sending you big hugs. Kristin went off to school right after she turned 3 this time last year. She rides the bus in her wheelchair, goes to an awesome school and we both love it. Its very hard to let them go. I went back to work but not fulltime, I work as little as I can get away with actually. Good luck with everything. I hope it goes great. It is hard at first. I go in about once a month and spend and hour or 2 in the classroom, plus picking her up early for appts etc. Let us know how it goes.

Elizabeth started 1st grade yesterday. So far, so good. I love her school and so far I think I'll like this year's teacher better than last year's. She's gone to school in panties both days and she's only had one accident. I was thrilled yesterday when she was wearing the same thing when she came home as she was wearing when she left.

She gets PT weekly, swimming weekly, OT monthly (this is something we've tried in vain to get increased) and speech 3 times a week. She also gets the same "specials" that she would get in a regular school - music, art, PE.

She loves school and really blossoms at school. It also makes my life a little less stressful. I think she gets bored at home and by the end of summer, I think everyone is ready for school to start.

My 4 year old is starting pre-k the day after Labor Day. She says she doesn't want to go to school, but I think she'll love it.
