I hope everyone had a great weekend! My family had a busy one as usual :) We went to a pumpkin patch and a friends 1st birthday party. When we were at our friends party it really hit my husband and I how far behind our son is :( A dad at the party did not know about Evan's delays and kept trying to give him toys to play/hold. Evan is almost 10 months and will not hold on to toys yet. I was just wondering if anyone else has a little one who has a problem holding onto toys. Evan does not seem very interested in toys in general. We thought it was a vision problem, maybe he just could not see the toys, but his vision test came back okay. He is still too young to really know what he sees but his vision had improved from our last visit. He responds well to playing with people and smiles easily. I just wish I knew why he is not holding onto things??

Thanks!
Sara

Hi Sara,
Kristin has never had good coordination of her hands. We used to help her hold things because the therapists wanted her to have oral motor stim but we don't really do that anymore. I"m not sure how his trunk control is but they have to develop things starting at the trunk so he may just not have the strength yet. Its very frustrating I know. Its great that he seems to love people and smiles easily at them. I think the rest will come. Does he get OT?

Sara,
Is he holding toys while lying down? One of the things we have noticed with our baby is when his trunk strength was very weak he did not hold onto things. His fine motor still very delayed but OT thinks it also has to do with his shoulder strength. That it is all connected. Someone gave us that thing that a baby lies on and toys dangle down and maybe that would help Evan to become interested. Well he is adorable !

I am learning patience but I know how hard it is sometimes especially in the beginning. My 14 month old baby Sidney is delayed in many areas but I am grateful for how happy and loving he is.
Sending all best wishes

Andrea

My DD Anna wouldn't hold toys either.  I don't think she had the fine motor control required to do so.  By age two she would hold onto toys, but until then she could hang on for seconds at best.  Compounding the problem was that she has a lot of sensory issues so she didn't like the feel of lots of different items.  Anna is also quite social, but wasn't interested in toys...at age 4 she's still not really much of a player, unless of course it is something with music and lights in which case she'll play non-stop (hit the buttons over and over and over) and she's been like that for as long as she could actually press down the buttons.

As far as being around typical kids, it can be tough.  Sometimes I make a point of saying right away that she is delayed, and other times I don't say anything unless I'm asked or a situation arises where the explanation is needed.

Hi Sara,

Ryan was also late to hold toys, so I gave him something in his hands all the time, in the car seat, in the stroller etc, Firstly the only thing I used was something like this as it had some many loops that if it fell out of his hands and onto his knee and he put his hand down even if not meaning to he would be able to pick it up. Try to make it as easy as possible for him until he gets the idea, it will come.
