From you description he was perfectly appropriate. No kid that age can handle that much quick transition, let alone a child with some special needs. I can't imagine that they don't see that frequently but who knows. I wouldn't let it bother you too much. Its not good to just take everything. Thats how kids get walked all over by the other kids.
I would be curious to see that report though.
