ok, have a front loader, and Im convinced this is why my dipes are not getting clean. Doing everything right, rinses, no softeners, tiny amt of detergent, tried baking soda, vinegar, borax, etc. What;s going on ? help ! Mostly it is knock you over ammonia smell, like I just had 4 diapers in the pail since yesterday and it was so bad that I am washing only 4 diapers right now.....

What detergent are you using? Have you tried a different kind? Have you tried actually using more detergent? Do they smell coming out of the washer or dryer or just after they have been used? What kind of diapers are they?

I have the same problem with my front loader, if I go to my in-laws and wash the diapers in their top loader all is fine. I'm finding that that my prefolds are fine but the thicker inserts for pockets need to be boiled frequently to get rid of the smell. It's either boil or wash them 5 times with an extra rinse and prewash, I only add soap to the first washing. If/when my front loader ever breaks I'll be replacing it with a top loader, assuming they still sell them. FYI I only use 1/4 tsp of Allen's, anymore than that and I've got MAJOR ammonia problems.

Front loaders are NOT diaper friendly.

Do you have hard water? Try stripping with Calgon water softener. You can also try adding Bac Out or Tea Tree Oil (we use about 5 drops regularly or up to 20 when DS has diaper rash). You might need to bleach your inserts-they could be harvesting bacteria and that could be the problem (Bac out and tea tree oil work for this too)

I was having this prob for the longest time. I mentioned it to the people at the local diaper store and they told me to try putting a wet towel in with my diapers when I washed them. Front loading washers determin how much water to use by weighting the load of dirty diapers and they said that the reason my diapers were not getting clean was prob because the washer wasn't using enough water. I tried it and I haven't had a problem with my diapers coming out not clean again. Hope this helps!
