Hi,

Now that I finally have my hubby talked into cloth diapers for our baby (who will be here in 2 weeks!),  I have been researching like crazy during my entire pregnancy and have even tried a trial package on our first daughter (21 months).

The diapers I tried were all one size (Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heiny, Bum Genius, etc.)  Of those that I've tried, I liked the Bum Genius best.

I was now looking at other options and wodering if prefolds/diaper covers would be a better choice?  I think I like the fact that a cover can be used more than once, cutting down on laundry.  I was looking at Wonder Wraps and Thirsties.  My questions are as follows:

Has anyone tried/liked/disliked these?  Other recommendations?

What are the best prefolds to use?  I heard Gerber ones are not all that great.

Is it better to use prefitted diapers under a diaper cover (like the Thirsty brands)?

Are one size covers better than S-M-L?

Any info anyone has to offer is greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much!!!

Sarah

Can't wait to see what everyone says.  I'm due in Jan and was thinking the prefold/cover route would work well for us too.  FWIW, I am leaning toward Thirsties.

Love the Thirsties covers. They are nice and stretchy and fit for a long time (I have only used the single size ones, not the one-size).

What are the best prefolds to use? I heard Gerber ones are not all that great.
It's worth it to invest in some high quality prefolds like Chinese or Indian prefolds from a cloth diapering website. And when I say invest, it's still usually less than $2 a diaper! Personally, I like Green Mountain Diapers for prefolds because they have a nice variety of sizes. It's so much easier to diaper a newborn when you have actual newborn size diapers, though you can fold larger ones over to fit too.

Is it better to use prefitted diapers under a diaper cover (like the Thirsty brands)?
We also used Kissaluvs fitteds in the newborn stage. DH would only use these and refused to use prefolds (I used both). The fitted diapers held in ALL of the runny newborn poop. We never had a blow-out.

Are one size covers better than S-M-L?
Only used the sized ones. We only used prefolds and fitteds for the first 3 months and then switched to pockets. I still use an occasional prefold on laundry day, and the Thirsties Medium size still fits my 16 month-old.

*I've only been CDing for a little over a month and didn't start until my baby was 4 months old and 16 pounds, so take my advice for what it's worth!*

Has anyone tried/liked/disliked these? Other recommendations?
I've used thirsties and thirsties duos - I like them both - nothing has escaped them yet :) I've also used Bummis whisper wraps and bummis super brights - they fit a little better overthe fitted diapers I have but the legs don't seem as leak proof. It's nice to have a little variety.

What are the best prefolds to use?
If you are going to mainly use prefolds, I highly recommend Green Mountain Diapers (aka Cloth-eez) prefolds. The quality is great, and they have five sizes, I think, versus the standard two (infant and premium). We currently use red edge (medium) prefolds, and I don't have to do any folding to fit them in medium covers. If you are just going to have prefolds as a backup to fitteds or another method, then you should be able to get a good quality prefold from most cloth diaper sites.

Is it better to use prefitted diapers under a diaper cover (like the Thirsty brands)?
Fitteds hold in runny baby poop better and make for quicker diaper changes than prefolds. On the other hand, they cost more and some are not as absorbent. In my experience the Thirsties fitteds fit great but aren't super absorbent.

Are one size covers better than S-M-L?
I've never tried any one size covers, but I do have a couple Thirsties duos (comes in two sizes to cover from birth to potty training), and I really like them. Thirsties claims that most one size covers don't fit newborns or bigger toddlers; something to keep in mind, but I don't know how true it is. I'd rather have the sized covers just because I feel like they fit a little better than one size, and I plan on CDing my next child and hopefully some of the covers will still be useable with baby #2.

Any info anyone has to offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!!
You can't go wrong buying some prefolds - even if you never use them to diaper, they make great burp cloths and changing pads :)

I can't help you with the covers, I just make my own. But i do know you want to avoid gerber at all cost LOL! Green Mountain prefolds are supposed to be really good from what i hear. Look for prefolds that say indian prefolds or chinese prefolds. I bought my prefolds at Little Lions. They also got good reviews.
