Hard Water Stink Issues--Help!

I have been cd'ing for a couple of weeks now. Everything was going well until a few days ago I started noticing that the diaper pail smelled a lot worse than usual. Usually the pee diapers just smell like pee. Now they don't have a strong ammonia smell, they just smell bad, like rotten garbage or something.

I'm thinking it's the hard water starting to buildup. I know it's not the detergent. I'm using Nellie's landry soda, which is supposed to be one of the higher rated soaps for cloth diapers. And I have only been using one and a half teapoons per load. (we have a front loader.) My usual wash routine is: cold rinse, sanitary (extra hot) wash with detergent, regular rinse plus extra rinse added on. The diapers/inserts don't smell when they're clean, just after she pees in them. The smell is mostly coming from the inserts (both the microfibre and bamboo ones). We are on a well and do have hard water (we have to soak our shower head and tap screens once in awhile because of the buildup).

I know I have to strip them. What should I try first? Vinegar? and how should I do it? Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, I do wonder if it has anything to do with the soap. Hard to tell, because we used Purex (no dye, no scent) for the first week and we didn't notice a smell, and then we switched to Nellie's and started noticing a smell, but it could just be the hard water eventually building up enough to cause a stink.

I would wash as usual but also add in some calgon liquid water softener which is sold in the laundry detergent isle.  That will strip out any minerals left from the hard water.  Then I do 2-3 extra rinses just to make sure they're clean.  If that doesn't work I suggest boiling the inserts or using a bit of bleach.

Ok, I will look for some Calgon at Walmart. Do you think they will have it? I live in Ontario, but the local Walmart is a pretty big one. I know the laundry detergent section is pretty big, so they may carry it.

And should I be using Calgon every time I wash? Or once in awhile?

CALGON :)!!! I buy mine in the powder (that's all that's available). It's best to start with freshly washed diapers. Take them ALL out. Use 1/2-2/3 recommended amount and dissolve well in water. Add your normal detergent. When it's dissolved well in HOT water (turn up your hot water heater or add boiling water-don't forget to turn your HWH down if you turn it up) add your diapers. Run a full hot cycle and then 2-4 extra rinses to get all the Calgon out. You may need to do it a couple times if there's a lot of hard water build up. HTH!
