It is Nov 30th.  My entire thyroid will be removed.  I was hoping to be able to save part of thyroid so I would have some thyroid function.  No such luck.  Surgeon beleives that best chances are total thyroidectomy.  It is only a 1 night stay so that isn't too bad.

Then I will be on the mend!

Wow, I'd think that's exciting and scary all at once!  But if it helps improve your health, then it's worth it.

One thing I'd ask about, since they're taking out the whole thyroid, is their success at preserving the parathyroids (there are 4 parathyroid glands sort of stuck on the back of the thyroid, and they're responsible for calcium metabolism).  Ideally they keep the parathyroids intact w/ their blood supply, but sometimes they have to transplant the parathyroids into the local muscle to regain blood supply, which is usually very successful at maintaining function.  Interesting stuff.

Whoops, sorry, there's the doctor in me sneaking out ;-o

Lots and lots of healing vibes to you!!!

Thank you Spencer.  They are going to try and spare the parathyroid.  It was already discussed.  That is one of the reasons for an over night stay.  They want to check my calcium levels.     And as far as transplanting parathyroid, I just learned that today.   Very interesting.

I signed off on my thyroid so they can use it for research.  Who knows, maybe my thyroid will be in a medical journal someday.   I also found out that my surgeon is very well known.  People from all over the US go to him.  Very comforting!!!

That is awesome!  Sounds like you've got the right man for the job!  I was thinking that one of the main reasons for overnight was monitoring the calcium.

I'm sure all will go smoothly :)  You're in good hands!
