I have been trying to cut back on breastfeeding my 22 month old to once a day for awhile now. I slowly decreased his feedings for about two weeks. Then all last week he was very sick with a bad stomach virus so I let him nurse probably 6-7 times a day to help with his fluid intake, because of that my milk supply has increased quite a lot. The problem is in 10 days I am leaving for 4 days and leaving my little guy with my dh. What would happen if I did not pump during those 4 days?
Part of me would not mind to countinue to nurse him once a day for a few more months but part of me feels that it would be a good time to wean.
Would I need to bring a pump to keep my supply up? Can you go for four days with no nursing and then still be able to nurse?
Any advice or experience is much appreciated, thank you!!

If you went four days without pumping, I think you might get a bad case of mastitis. If you want to keep your supply up you should pump as often as your baby nurses. And even then, the pump is less efficient at getting milk so you still might have a little less milk supply when you get back. I have never left my babies for that long so I don't know if your baby will still want to nurse when you get back, but from what I have heard some do continue to nurse. Anna

Hi there,

I have experience with almost exactly this! Back in December I left my ds (about 27 months at the time) for 4 days with my dh -- the first time I'd been away longer than one night. Since then I've had two more business trips, and done the same thing for about the same length of time.

I absolutely needed to pump, both to keep my supply up, and also to relieve fullness. (I've always had a good supply, and am a little bit prone to mastitis.) I find pumping to be a pain -- especially when I'm working all day, with no place to sterilize etc., though my company does have "mother rooms" for pumping. I never bothered trying to save the milk - just pump and dump.

I did leave some milk for him to drink the first time I went, and I think that was nice, though not strictly necessary, since he doesn't need to nurse for nutrition at this point.

Anyway, in all cases, the first thing he wanted to do when I got back home was nurse -- no problems starting up again. I did notice a definite drop in supply, because pumping is just not as good as nursing directly, but it always came back up in a few days.

So, I say that if you don't want to wean completely, you certainly don't have to.

Thank you Karen for your reply. I just came back from my trip and that is exactly what I did. My little guy is also named Ethan and had no problems picking up right where we left off with nursing.
thanks again for your reply
