We're two weeks into kindy now and Philip is loving it. They don't have gifted here until the 4th grade. I'm not sure if that means they don't test until then, or what. Given their limited financial resources(they don't even have a PE or music teacher) I highly doubt they test before they have to. I was able to get him into a K-1 class, though. It's only K-1 because it's an overflow. 6 kindergardners and 13 first graders. The K's go half day and the 1st's get low class numbers for the afternoon. The teacher said she would be more than willing to give Philip the 1st grade work once the school year was into the swing of things and he'd shown her mastery of the kindergarten curriculum. I don't think it will be long, considering he's about to turn in his second sight word certificate(100 words) and will probably be done with the 250 word list in about a week.
Kira started Kindergarten mid August. It has been extremely easy for her so far, but she likes that because she wants to be the best one in the class (we're trying to explain that while it's good to want to be the best, it's not always going to happen and that that's ok as well as long as she is trying to do her best). Anyway, they do not have a gifted program but there are only 8 kids in class (all-day classes btw) so she'll get plenty of one on one time. They are starting reading groups next week and the teacher already told me that Kira will be in her own group since she is the only one already reading and no one else is even close to her. She said after the initial introduction of terminology, while the other kids are working on individual letter sounds, Kira will be doing readers. I know the teacher knows she can read, but I think she will be surprised at just how many big words she really knows. I know it amazes me to hear her sound out a 4+ syllable word correctly!
