Hi Kim,
Chloral Hydrate is a sedation drug that is taken orally. You will be able to rock your little one to sleep. They will put little electrodes on the head on the 2 ears and one at the top of the head. They will then put insert phones into the ears and they will wee what level he is hearing at. This test mainly test the high frequency tones. If you want to test the low tones request it and they will do it. They will do it in the end. (BUT YOU HAVE TO REQUEST IT) I did hold Rylee when she was a baby with her 1st ABR. Be careful in doing it as often when that does happen the insert phones do come out of the ears easy. When you lay them down on the bed they tend to stay in more (we had to repeat the test 6 weeks later b/c of that...so I am sure you do not want to do that). This past time they laid her on a bed and we wrapped her in a blanket and they got the test done in quick and efficient timing. I sat in and read the computer as the test ran so I knew the results immediately. You can do that too, they will teach you how to read it. As for the sedation drug, the kids come off it like any other anesthetic. Have a whole bunch of apple juice on hand. Milk and formula are a little heavy and they can choke and they are HUNGRY when they wake up. Rylee was unable to stand afterward, but fell back asleep in the car and when she woke up a little wobbly but fine about an hour after it. I hope this helps. The appt afterward is normal. But it gets the audiologist sign off of the prescript for the appropriate hearing aids...you need that! I know lots of traveling...it totally stinks. I sometimes just cried b/c I just want to be home with my little one playing!

PS. Have them do a tampanagram on Monday...that way you know his ears are clear of fluid too...that will eliminate any questions too....ANY kind of fluid can affect a child up to 20 dcbls!!!!
