set for Monday at 12:30. They are doing a sedated ABR. (I'm not real thrilled about having to have him sedated). Can anyone tell me about this chloral hydrate? They assure me that I WILL have answers Monday after the test. They also said that I could be right there with him the entire time. Hold him while he is out in a recliner while they do the test. Afterwards an ENT will check his ears and based on the results possibly order a CAT scan or MRI. If they don't do them that day I'm going to request that we get it done at our local hospital and have the results sent up rather than drive another two hours one-way when a sniper is intent on shooting people randomly on the interstate. GRRRRRRRRR. I will definitely be taking a Xanex on Monday or I will be jumping out of my skin and be a candidate for an anxiety attack. I had one last Thursday before his appointment and that wasn't even putting him under anything.

We also have to go up there next Thursday for the evaluation with the Pediatric developmental people. I think that my dad is going to drive us up for that to ease the burden of all this driving back and forth. At this point my husband doesn't think that he will be going to that appointment because he is sure that it will be his hearing and there's not much more that they can say, more of a procedural thing than anything else.

So I guess we could still use prayers, wishes and luck for Monday. Still hoping for positive news. Thank you all for your support, I really, really appreciate it.

Kim

(((KIM))).....this is good news.  I can't believe there is a snipper in that area...where do you live??! Anyway, you will have answers following the ABR.  Hopefully they will also do a threshold search if there is measurable hearing....ask about this.  What I mean...once the ABR is done and they figure out if there is any residual hearing available or not, I would hope they would then do a threshold search and tell you at what intensities he hears at which frequencies.  These results with those obtained in the sound proof booth will be necessary for hearing aid selection if he needs one!

Best of luck...he will do just great.  If memory serves, I think the sedation wears off pretty fast! Keep us posted.

HUGS!

Hi Kim,

Chloral Hydrate is a sedation drug that is taken orally. You will be able to rock your little one to sleep. They will put little electrodes on the head on the 2 ears and one at the top of the head. They will then put insert phones into the ears and they will wee what level he is hearing at. This test mainly test the high frequency tones. If you want to test the low tones request it and they will do it. They will do it in the end. (BUT YOU HAVE TO REQUEST IT) I did hold Rylee when she was a baby with her 1st ABR. Be careful in doing it as often when that does happen the insert phones do come out of the ears easy. When you lay them down on the bed they tend to stay in more (we had to repeat the test 6 weeks later b/c of that...so I am sure you do not want to do that). This past time they laid her on a bed and we wrapped her in a blanket and they got the test done in quick and efficient timing. I sat in and read the computer as the test ran so I knew the results immediately. You can do that too, they will teach you how to read it. As for the sedation drug, the kids come off it like any other anesthetic. Have a whole bunch of apple juice on hand. Milk and formula are a little heavy and they can choke and they are HUNGRY when they wake up. Rylee was unable to stand afterward, but fell back asleep in the car and when she woke up a little wobbly but fine about an hour after it. I hope this helps. The appt afterward is normal. But it gets the audiologist sign off of the prescript for the appropriate hearing aids...you need that! I know lots of traveling...it totally stinks. I sometimes just cried b/c I just want to be home with my little one playing!

If you have anymore questions e-mail me! dvanzoest9@hotmail.com

Diane

PS. Have them do a tampanagram on Monday...that way you know his ears are clear of fluid too...that will eliminate any questions too....ANY kind of fluid can affect a child up to 20 dcbls!!!!
