This board will be merged into the Kids with Special Needs board within approximately one week in an effort to create a larger more active community for everyone. Once the merge occurs, this board will become read-only. There will be a dedicated Hearing Impairments folder on that board and your community leader will continue to keep her position as hostess over there as well.

We hope you will continue to visit and support the new merged community as well as others on iVillage.

Thank you for your participation and support!

This is absolutely a horrible idea! It has been my professional experience that when low incidence disability populations are "merged" with all disabilities, the needs of the higher incidence populations are met while the issues of the few are ignored. How many parents of kids with learning disabilities, who have their own set of needs and issues, will understand or even care about someone's audiogram, ABR or experience with assistive listening devices in school? Disability-specific support and advocacy groups exist for a reason. They are growing in number and in strength. This is definitely a step backwards. Parents learn from other parents who have "been there and done that." The unique needs of children with hearing loss will be lost among the sea of issues faced by children with higher incidence disabilities.

This is an outrage!!!! Hearing impaired children have extremely different needs than other special needs children. There are many factors involved. Hearing impairments should not "fall" into a general special needs category. It's inconvenient for members to have to dig and search for information on hearing impairments and be referred to a special needs board. It IS a step backwards and quite frankly, a slap in the face to the members that exist here. Parents want to come to a place that exists for "their" children only.

The hearing impairments board may be a slow moving board but it is full of useful information related to that. Afterall, I thought these boards were "for" the parents!!

I absolutely agree with you, Gina. I mean, look at this board! I think we've had 3 new mommies arrive in the past 2 or 3 months! They were met with assistance and support that could not be provided on a "general board."

I agree with your excellent points as well! I have e-mailed cmkelly with my extreme disappointment of this merger. I do hope they will reconsider!
