I am trying to choose my words carefully.

I hope that you all continue posting on this board, as a demonstration of how important it is. Please, let's not give up.

Now an actual question...

For those of you that have children who receive "special transportation" services on their individual educational plans, how many have kids who are released from class early to catch the bus? An advocate in my area brought it to my attention that this is a common practice in her school district and the students are losing the last 15 minutes of the day. Besides the fact that it is illegal unless the student has "shortened school day" on their IEP, has anyone else experienced this?

I am new to this board although I've lurked around for quite awhile, I've never actually posted here.
In responce to your question. I do run into this problem although my issue is with his arrival at school. Mo is supposed to arrive at the school at 8 am but is just picked up at 8. By the time they load up his wheelchair, etc. He doesn't arrive at school until about 8:20. I've asked about this and have been told that the handicapped accessible bus also has to be used to transport 2 other students to a nearby school district. Mo only goes to school half days (my choice) so this really cuts into his day.
It's frustrating but I'm not sure what to do about it.

Glad to see you made it here, Blest!

As for the issue with transportation, honestly, if Mo is supposed to have a certain amount of hours in school and that is documented on his IEP, you should call an IEP meeting to discuss that issue. If you cannot come to a resolution with the school, contact your district's special education office. They should have a compliance person on staff. If not, don't be shy. Call your state department of education and ask to speak to someone in complaints.
