Cigarette smoking and hearing loss....m
I found this interesting. http://www.hear-it.org/page.dsp?page=1605
What they did not mention is that children living in a home with a smoker and exposed to second hand smoke are VERY likely to have middle ear infections...This is because the eustachian tube of a child is more horizontal (this changes as one ages, hence decreasing the chances of infection), and when you inhale smoke this can get trapped in the middle ear. Being a "foreign" matter the ear tries to get rid of it, and begins to secrete fluid from the lining of the middle ear (sort of like trying to "flush" out the toxins), and this can cause a build up of fluid that in turn can become infected because in fact smoke is a toxin.
