I am looking for info. online - or a great book - that explains the heart in terms a a 3.5 yo can understand.  My DD asked me about our hearts today and all I could tell her was that the heart pumps blood and that blood carries oxygen, and the nutrients from the good foods we eat, to help our bodies stay strong.  She asked me if there was a book so she could see a heart and then said, "Don't worry, Mama - you can just find it online," LOL!  I am looking right now but not able to find much.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!

You might try The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body -- the link to this book is above. Or try this book: My Big Busy Body.

Also, if you ever wanted a road trip to Pennsylvania, there is a large Children's Museum with a walk through heart. It's at the Franklin Institute and here's a link to their site:

Hope some of this helped.

TY, Kellie!  I just called the AHA and they have something called HeartPower which looks great.  It has educational materials for preschool - 8th grade and can be found at http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3003357 for anyone interested.

Something DS made a year or so ago in the science co-op: make a heart shape of construction paper. Cut 4 slits in it - top left, top right, lower left, lower right. Tie together a length of blue yarn and a length of red yard. Thread through the holes/slits then tie the free end. The yarn "blood" can then be pulled through from the blue depleted blood coming into the heart, then being "pumped" out and the red oxygenated blood coming back in and then being pumped out to the body. Wish I could show it to you - much easier to explain.

If no one has suggested this-you can check out ADAM online for homeschoolers. http://www.adam.com/medlifescience/homeschool/default.asp

I can see that they mainly have items for older children but I think you can adjust it for smaller kids. I started teaching my daughter about the circulatory system when she was 4.5 and she totally got it and retained the info.
We used ADAM in our college biology course and it was awesome. They have sintructors online who will sit int he middle of an enlarged heart and walk through the entire process for you. It is very cool visually.

one thing we did was be really hands on. I had my dd breathe in deep and hold her hands on her ribs. I told her that underneath her hands were her lungs and that is where all the air went. Then I had her listen to a stethoscope and told her that was the sound of her heart beat. The heart pumped blood all throughy her body...we did the sing song head shoulders, knees, and toes for that excersize to emphasize where all the blood went from the heart. I then mentioned that the blood from the heart passed the lungs and picked up some air before it took it to the rest of the body. When the blood was out of air, it went through the heart and lungs again. My DD then used her art supplies to draw me a picture of what she knew about the heart and where all the blood went. It was really neat having her guess what color the blood would be and draw the process out. She made the air blue and blood without air green..LOL.

Hope this helps.

Jen

P.S. Some links for older kids as well.

http://sln.fi.edu/giantheart/index.html (gigantic heart exhibit in Philadelphia...it would be so cool to be able to walk through this with my five year old)

http://www.brainpop.com/health/seeall/ very cool site but you have to pay 9 dollars monthly for access and I think they make you agree to purchase for a year.
