So I'm scheduling my 3 year old daughter for therapies through the school district.

The Occupational Therapist just told me that parents don't come in with their children. "She needs to be weened off of you." I explained that she shuts down and can't communicate with you, but she just said that "maybe the first time she comes in, you can stay for a few minutes, then wait in the office."

My 3 year old has been in therapies privately for a year... I have never been asked to not be there.

What would you do? Would you just let her go? Would it be good or bad do you think?

"She needs to be weened off of you."

I don't think that Occupational Therapists are qualified to make this kind of assessment.

I'd think that the OT would WANT the parent present, so that the parent could be an informed partner in the child's therapy.

Deborah

p.s. I've just edited this post for clarity, and also because I agree with the next two posters: that the child shouldn't be alone with the OT at this age, period.

This is a 3 year old? No way I would not go with her and observe. I would go in look OT lady in the eye and say "Mother knows Best," then stay.  She has no legal right to keep you out of the room. Sure you can sit next to dd or behind her in the room and give them some space as your 3 year old is able but I would not feel leaving the room would help at all.

At 5 or 6 I'd let her go alone if she was okay with it. At 3? I'm sorry, no way, no how.

I would not in any way, shape, or form force my 3 year old to go somewhere without me.  She's already shutting down in situations where she's uncomfortable...do they somehow magically think that your not being there will make her comfortable with the situation and somehow able to cope better???  Uh, no.  They've got too much of the "parents aren't necessary" school mentality for my liking.  As the op said, you NEED to be present so you can work with her at home.  The goal is to help her...why shouldn't you be helping her at home?
