This ruling is wrong on so many levels, I just can't even believe that a judge, let alone a panel of three judges, could have come to this decision, and I fail to see how having a child taught by a credentialed teacher would protect them from abuse. When we were hsing in LA County I always felt that CA homeschoolers were so fortunate to have it so easy down there, as far as regulations go - now I'm beginning to see how having specific hs legislation can be a good thing.

I'm definitely keeping all of the California homeschoolers in my thoughts and prayers.

There is a petition on hslda's website, now.  I'm praying for all of you California families.

I agree that the issue is some of these kids alleging abuse. Abuse happens in families where kids go to school, so how is hs'ing an issue here?

Unfortunately, the judge who brought hs'ing into this legal situation has opened a whole can of worms that didn't need to be opened and has now really muddied the waters. The kids in question deserve to be safe but it needs to be handled as it normally is--without hs'ing being brought into it.

What's next--the teachers who don't notice signs of abuse are going to be charged with some type of neglect?

This is so crazy. My thoughts are with all California hs'ers.

Kath

This ruling will affect more than those educating their children at home, as it insists that those teaching have a current CA teaching credential. I know that many of the teachers in both the private school my middle son attended at one point and the public schools that educated my older two employ individuals without current teaching credentials. In the case of the public school, they may be working toward them, but do not currently hold them.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm in compliance with CA education code. My sons attend the brick and mortar school in which they are enrolled. The fact that they also live here is not an issue. I am capable of teaching, as the education code demands. I keep their immunizations, birth certificates, daily attendance and course of studies in a folder as required of any private school.

I feel grateful that the HSC, CHN, and CHEA are working together to guarantee the rights of all Californians to educate their children.
