My two cents.
I'm taking hypnobirthing classes. I think taking the class is a huge benefit but I know it's not readily available everywhere. The basic class is great to gather information but not very good for preparing someone for a natural (no medical interventions) birth. One of the main premises in hypnobirthing is that you need to get all the negative steriotypes about childbirth out of your head. It doesn't have to be horribly painful. Stop talking to your mom.
My mother had both kids natural and we were big babies with long labors.... she told me that it was uncomfortable but not what she calls painful. For her transition was the toughest but it was quick.
Hypnobirthing is all about keeping a calm and relaxed atmosphere around you and breathing through the uterine surges (contractions) so that you keep your muscles relaxed. RELAXED is the key. If you feel a contraction and hold your breath and tighten up all your muscles then you make the pain worse. The uturus contracts in order to open the cervix wider.... if you tighten up your muscle you prevent that and fight your own body. This causes more pain. The breathing and relaxation techniques need practiced every day in order to prepare yourself to be able to follow through when the time comes. It's not easy and hypnobirth doesn't promise that it will be, it just make a lot of sense to me. If there is a class in your area I'd highly recommend taking it because I am learnign alot.
First day of class they told us to stop allowing people to tell us all the bad things about childbirth, stop watching docudramas, all that negative stuff just causes you more anxiety and fear and that in turn will make you fear the birth experience which in turn will lead to more tension and pain.
You just like all of us are more than capable of having a good natural birth that is NOT the most painful experience of your life.
Read up and watch some hypnobirthing stories they are very motivating. There are even some on youtube.
