My daughter is a special needs child, who had an iep....

She is in 8th grade now. 60% contained class and 40% gen. class.

She is in  sewing and came home up-set b/c the class was making a project that she was unable to do. She wasn't up-set that she couldn't do it,she was more up set the Teacher wouldn't modify a project for her, instead she was going to draw in the back of the class room......AND then I went to school and told them if she was in sewing she would sew. If you want her to draw, then put her in art....

I'm up-set b/c the first week of school the sewing teacher sent a note home stating the class would do a project to send $4.00,I sent the money along with a note saying that if D couldn't do class project the teacher had my permission to spend the money on another project, also if she needed more money or if she would like me to shop for it I would.....

A week later the school had their open house.I went to meet the sewing teacher, who avoided me ,until I was the only parent left in the room and she knew I wasn't going to leave..lol....I asked her if she had the chance to read My daughters iep....She said NO!!! I have not,It took everything in me to say...thanks for the truth and left the room.....

So, I was asking myself, who else hasn't taken the time to read the directions for my daughters education....You won't believe what I found out..

I called the school conselor,to see if she was going to her 1 time a week.....She told me she didn't have time for that,I told her wasn't a choice it was the law.....

I can't believe that teachers think that they are above the law.

I have a meeting tomorrow with the school to settle this, and may end up requesting a due process hearing, seeing that the head of education has yet to return my phone calls......I will post more tomorrow

Immediately, request an IEP meeting.  Ask that sewing teacher and counselor be present at the meeting, specifically.  That would be the best forum to address the sewing class and appropriate modifications so she can participate.  Drawing the back of the class is clearly inappropriate, and I would demand this be rectified.  The counselor needs to know what is in the IEP.

The case manager is ultimately responsible for making sure all staff are aware of IEP provisions.  Have you also contacted him/her about these issues?

Honestly you would be amazed at how many Gen. Ed. teachers don't read those IEP's.  Is it right? no.  But the number is large.

Let us know what happens w/ the IEP meeting.  They are bound by law to abide by the current IEP and you know they can't deny you of the meeting.  You just keep sitting there until you get what you need for your daughter.
