Newbie. Not implementing accommodations.

Hello everyone. I haven't needed help on my son's IEP in awhile, which is good, but I am wondering how to handle this in the most diplomatic way?

My son has several accommodations written into his IEP for the general education setting. It appears that the teacher is not following any of them and, in fact, at our IEP meeting last week, when I asked how the accommodations were working out, she only mentioned one and said it wouldn't apply given the way she teaches lessons. She didn't mention any of the others.

I don't agree with her assessment that this particular accommodation can't be implemented and I am also concerned that none of the others are being implemented.

I would like suggestions about how to work with the teacher on this, as I do have a cordial relationship with her and I don't want it to become adversarial. Is there a way to be very persuasive without being challenging that she isn't doing what she is supposed to? How would a teacher want to be approached?

Thanks for any advice,
dpblusee

Hi :)

Honestly it isn't a choice she can make, whether she wants to apply the accommadations or not.  Its in his IEP and by law she has to provide them plain and simple.

I would call another IEP meeting and ask that the principal be there, express your concerns politely and tell them that you want the IEP followed b/c it is in the best interest of your child.

If this persists I would go to the head of Special Education for your school system.  I am sure you want this to be a last resort, I did too.  But I had to do this for my son because his Special Ed. teacher was giving me the run around too.

Forget being nice.  This teacher is willfully violating the law.  Have a conference with her, make it clear you expect the accomodations made, and if things don't change IMMEDIATELY go over her head.
