How much time does the school have to ?

Long-time lurker here.

I submitted a request, via email, for some changes to my 7th grade son's 504 Plan at the end of September. I was given the plan to sign at our annual meeting at the beginning of September, but held off responding until I saw the results of his NCLB testing from last spring.

My requested changes/additions were not significant (IMHO) and just reflect that natural change in supports he needs as he progresses through middle school (he has ADHD. Lack of organizational skills is becoming more problematic and hyperactivity less)

How long does the school have to respond to my requests? I assume his pre-existing 504Plan still in effect until this one is signed?

Via emails with the nurse and principle today, NOTHING has been done.

Thanks,

Cindy, mom to

Chris, 12/96, ADHD, sensory issues

Ryan, 10/99

and Meagan, 10/02

I am not sure of a 'certain amount of time'.  You are correct though that your current plan is still in place until a new one is signed.  I do know that most 'if not all' schools have a team which meets once a month.  Our is called our BBST (building based support team), they meet once a month to address any new requests/changes which need to be made for a child's IEP or 504 Plan.  After that they contact the parents and set up a meeting.  It could be the same for your school.  If you don't hear anything after this week I would call the principal myself and see what is happening.  A verbal update is better than an email one sometimes.

Hi,

If I were you I might google Office of Civil Rights 504 and see if you can find the info.  I am not a big fan of 504's because they do not have the legal pull and IEP has.  When my son had a 504 I would email and call in a request for a meeting and it would be ignored to the T.

Thanks. My kids go to a very small charter school, and as such it doesn't have the layers of administration or formal processes. 504Plans are outside the Child Study Team's purview. I hounded the principle and we're meeting Friday morning. Apparently nothing happens without her involvement and direction, even though the school nurse is the "504 Plan coordinator".
