I just read an article about a new study done about the results of implanting one embryo versus two.    The findings were that there wasn't much difference in the success rate, but there wasn't any information given on the ages of the participants, among other factors.  For someone trying for a long time, the 4% difference between the success rates could mean alot.  What do you think?  Has anyone seen further information on this study?

BOSTON - Women who initially receive just one embryo during in vitro fertilization are as likely to produce a child as women implanted with two, Swedish researchers reported on Wednesday.

The research, which follows up on a 2004 study, comes amid widespread concern over health risks to mothers and babies associated with multiple births that often occur when more than one embryo is implanted using test tube baby technology.

Dr. Ann Thurin-Kjellberg of Gothenburg University and her colleagues report in the New England Journal of Medicine that they initially gave 661 women either one or two embryos.

If the women didn't become pregnant, they received embryos that had been frozen and thawed. One or two frozen embryos were implanted for each attempt, and up to four such attempts were made.

More than half, 53 percent, of the women implanted with one embryo on the initial try gave birth, compared to 57 percent who received two embryos on the first attempt, an insignificant difference, the researchers said.

But there was a big difference in the odds of having twins or premature babies.

The multiple birth rate was nearly 28 percent and the risk of a premature baby more than doubled among the women who initially received two embryos, compared to a multiple birth rate of 2.3 percent for women who started off in the single-embryo group.

"This research adds further evidence confirming the value of elective single embryo transfer in assisted reproductive technologies," said Dr. Richard Kennedy, a spokesman for the International Federation of Fertility Societies.

Thanks for sharing the article Melissa.

I wish that the media and reporters would stop using the term "implanting" and use the correct medical terminology which is transferring. They are transferring embryos, not implanting them for crying out loud!

I almost can't even read articles or watch news reports that don't use the correct verbiage anymore. Implantation is basically the difference of IVF works or not, so for the media to use the wrong words it just makes it even that much more difficult for the average non-infertile person to understand the IVF process.

Well, all the horror stories about multiples did scare me out of transferring more than one embie for my first IVF procedure. It was apparently the right decision because I conceived without a hitch, and have a beautiful, 16-month-old daughter to show for it.

We're now getting ready to try for #2 with our two remaining totsicles, and are struggling with the one-vs.-two dilemma as the odds are lower with frozen vs. fresh embies. They were frozen in separate straws, so the choice is ours.

It's probably worth mentioning I went the egg donor route (I'm 47) so embryo quality wasn't as big an issue with me as it might be for women using their own eggs.

So our office told us that there is a lot of research available about the number of embies to transfer.

THey showed us a chart during our first meeting with the doc that showed the stats for 1 embie, 2 embie, and 3 embie transfers.  They recommend that everyone does 2 embies and some higher risk patients do 3 embies.  Oddly, the chances of single live birth were at 2 embie transfer.  Obviously, the chances overall of live birth were increased a lot by 3 embies.

I will ask when I go in this weekend for the cite on the study.  I'm curious now.  I saw it on day one, but was so overwhelmed that I may have not asked as many questions as I would today.  LOL

I'm googling my butt off now.

Well, my RE asked me up until the last second if I wanted one or two embies transferred...they were both a 5dt and hatching.  I'm glad I went with two, as I only have one little guy growing right now.  I would have been devastated if I had asked for just one and it had been the one that didn't make it.
