I'm trying to decide what to do so I figured I'd get some opinions from others. I have two boys, a 6yo (Aidan) in kindergarten and a 22mo (Grayson) in daycare and I teach preschool and so I'm trying to decide if we should all get the H1N1 vaccine. Our school district is hosting a clinic later this week so that children in kindergarten through third grade can get the vaccine. Should I let Aidan get the vaccine? Should Grayson and I get it as well? Will you let your child(ren) receive the vaccine? Will you get it?

There was a big discussion about this on DD's playgroup.   Basically it appears that H1N1 is a sub-type of the seasonal flu.  So this vax is not radically different from the usual flu vaccines.  It was manufactured in the same way.   Unless you have an egg allergy it appears that anyone can take this vax though they are targeting the high-risk groups first.  As a preschool teacher you would definitely qualify to get it as well as both of your kids.

None of us have ever had a flu vax before.  But b/c my DS suffers from chest infections (H1N1 attacks the lungs) I will be getting it for him if it becomes available.  They are supposed to be offering it in schools soon.   I don't think I will vax my DD b/c she is a very healthy kid.  I would have to take her to the GP's and I hate going to that office.  We would probably end up catching something else while waiting for the vax.

as soon as our school district announces that they have them...yes we are getting them. well, the kids are...I am probably not. My kindy and my kindy alumni prolly won't get them till jan though...so, I may call the kids ped to ask if they are getting the vaccine and then get it that way. My son, who has asthma, will def be getting it also. Now, they are supposedly going to start passing it out to the secondary grades soon....at least that is what they said.... I really wish they would announce something like you just mentioned...i'd be first in line...LOL okay, well, close enough to first...;-)

Hi ladies, we had Claire McCarthy, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School answer some questions about H1N1 from moms around iVillage. The questions and answers can be found here:
