Not trying to scare anyone... just thought this story was interesting!

Mom gives birth on airplane over Malaysia

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33450381/ns/travel-news/

A Malaysian woman who gave premature birth to a boy on board an airplane minutes before it landed will get free flights for life along with her child, an airline official said Friday.

Liew Siaw Hsia, 31, gave birth on budget carrier AirAsia's flight from Penang to Kuching on Wednesday.

A second trimester preemie with no immediate access to medical care is very serious and very scary.  Most 27 week preemies are not in "good shape" even with the best of care.

What disturbs me is that the article refers to mom as 11 weeks away from being due, but 38 weeks is not the due date.

What I will say about other stories that we hear, about women giving birth on the side of the road in their SUV, etc - full term births, I'm referring to, in women with no pre existing complications - funny isn't it how every time we read or hear one of those stories on the news or cnn.com, it always ends with the mother and baby being perfectly healthy and fine - despite the fact that they had no medical intervention, no medication available, etc.

Good point- I didn't even catch that 11 weeks + 27 weeks = only 38 weeks!  I, too, am wondering if they baby is really doing well.  The article said that the condition was unknown but someone said they were fine.  My twins were born at 33 weeks and were very healthy but still spent time in the NICU.  I was told that if it had been just a few weeks earlier they most likely would have had long-term complications.  Scary!
